Chapter 7 - The Tablet of Reckoning

Leo Vance dropped his weapon onto the hospital floor, his knees hitting the linoleum right beside it. "Sir... I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know. My sister’s medical bills... I was desperate. The broker offered forty thousand cash."
William walked over, picked up Leo’s gun, and handed him a digital tablet that Maya had just brought into the room from the adjoining monitoring closet.
"If you want to save yourself from a federal execution chamber, Leo, you are going to use that tablet right now," William said. "Call Sloan. Tell her the job is done. Tell her the wife is dead, and the baby didn't make it. Tell her you need the remaining twenty thousand delivered to the secure warehouse on the docks in thirty minutes."
Leo wiped the sweat from his forehead, gripping the tablet with trembling hands. He activated the encrypted video-link.
Within two rings, Sloan Carmichael’s face appeared on the screen. She was sitting in the passenger seat of Marcus’s luxury sports car, a bottle of champagne open between them.
"Is it handled?" Sloan hissed into the camera, her perfect features twisting with greed.
"It's done," Leo said, forcing his voice into a flat, professional monotone. "She stopped breathing at 12:02 AM. The hospital is in chaos. I need my money, Sloan. Now. The docks. Pier 4."

Marcus leaned into the frame, a savage, triumphant grin on his face. "Good man. We're already on our way. Let's finish this."
The screen went black. Victoria pulled the tape off her arm, sitting up in the hospital bed, her face flushed with a fierce, burning anger. "Let’s go, Dad. I want to see his face when the world falls on him."
