Chapter 6 - The Broken Silence

The fallout from the River Club meeting was swift and invisible to the public eye. Marcus Gallo vanished from the city's ledger within forty-eight hours, his name scrubbed from the Marcone business listings as if he had never existed. The docks at Pier 42 were quietly transferred to Moretti logistics, securing Vincent’s absolute control over the eastern shipping lines.
But inside the Long Island estate, the victory brought a different kind of intensity.
Emily sat on the plush rug of Lucas's bedroom, her back against the mahogany bed frame. The little boy was fast asleep, his small chest rising and falling in a slow, peaceful rhythm, his arm curled around the drawing of the tree and the bird that had finally found its path.
The door creaked open, and Vincent stepped inside. He had changed into a soft black cashmere sweater and dark trousers, his imposing frame looking less like a warlord and more like a father whose long watch had finally ended. He stood by the bed for a long time, his eyes fixed on his sleeping son, before he looked down at Emily.
"He didn't wake up once tonight," Vincent said, his voice a low whisper that vibrated in the quiet room. "Before you came, he used to scream in his sleep. Every night at 3:00 a.m. The exact time the car caught fire four years ago."
Emily stood up smoothly, her silk dress rustling against the rug. She walked over to him, her heart doing that strange, heavy flutter it always did when they were alone in the dark. "He was trapped in that moment, Vincent. He thought if he spoke, the fire would start again. He was keeping his family safe by remaining silent."
Vincent looked down at her, his green eyes burning with a raw, unprotected vulnerability she had never seen in him before.
"And who's going to keep you safe, Emily?" he asked, his hand rising to cup the back of her neck, his thumb sliding along her pulse point. "You stood at that table with the monsters of this city and you didn't flinch. You gave my son his life back, and you gave me back my soul. But you've put yourself in the center of my target."
"I'm not afraid of your targets, Vincent," Emily said, her voice steady, her hand rising to rest against his broad chest, feeling the heavy, powerful beat of his heart beneath the cashmere. "I was afraid of the silence. But this house isn't silent anymore."
Vincent let out a low, ragged breath, his control finally snapping after weeks of restraint. He pulled her against his chest, his arms wrapping around her waist with a fierce, possessive force that took her breath away. He brought his mouth down to hers, his kiss deep, intense, and full of a desperate, rising hunger that had been building since the night they met in the hospital room.
Emily clung to his shoulders, her fingers digging into the soft wool of his sweater as she opened her mouth to him. The kiss tasted of cedar, rain, and a dangerous, beautiful promise that she knew would bind her to him for the rest of her days. He wasn't just a mafia boss, and she wasn't just a speech therapist from Queens. They were two pieces of a broken world that had finally found the grain.

When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, his breath hot and uneven against her lips. "I’m not letting you go back to Queens, Emily. The clinic stays funded, your friend Sarah can run the daily operations, but your life is here. With me. With Lucas. I am claiming you as part of this family, and God help anyone who tries to contest it."
Emily looked up into his fierce, beautiful face, her hand rising to trace the hard line of his jaw. "I'm already home, Vincent," she whispered.
