Chapter 9 - The Legitimate Frontier

The expansion of V.M. Enterprises over the next year became a blueprint for corporate reformation across the country. The old holding companies were dissolved, replaced by The Moretti-Carter Foundation for Communication and Development. The foundation didn't just fund Emily's old clinic in Queens; it built ten new pediatric speech centers across the five boroughs, ensuring that no child would ever be locked in silence because their family couldn't afford a specialist.

It was an early morning in October 2026.

The air was crisp, carrying the scent of turning leaves and sea salt from the harbor. Emily stood at the window of the foundation’s new headquarters on Pier 42, looking out over the bustling, clean docks where massive container ships were being unloaded by automated cranes.

She wore a sharp, cream-colored business suit, her wedding ring catching the morning light as she reviewed the annual allocation report.

"The Queens clinic has a waiting list of zero, Emily," Sarah Mitchell said, stepping into the office with a tray of hot lattes. "Every child who needs a device or a therapist is getting seen within seven days. The board wants to expand the program to Brooklyn by January."

"Let's do it," Emily said, a proud, satisfied smile touching her lips. "Vincent said the logistics lines from the northern channel are clear. We have the budget to double our outreach."

The door to the office opened, and Vincent walked inside. He wore a simple charcoal wool sweater and dark jeans, his hair slightly damp from the harbor mist. He had Lucas by the hand, who was carrying a large blueprint under his arm, looking like a miniature engineer.

"We finished the survey of the lower channel, Mama," Lucas said, running over to the desk and spreading the blueprint across her paperwork. He was ten now, his growth spurt making him look more like Vincent every day. "Look at the depth readings near the outer marker. We can build the new educational aquarium right here, without disturbing the sturgeon paths."

Emily knelt down beside her son, her hand gently tracing the lines he had drawn on the blueprint. "This looks perfect, Lucas. You’ve thought of everything."

Vincent stepped behind them, his large arms wrapping around both of his treasures, pulling them against his chest with a heavy, contented sigh. He leaned down, pressing a warm kiss against Emily’s cheek before looking down at his son.

"You're a good partner, sport," Vincent said softly, his voice full of that deep, absolute warmth that belonged only to this room. "But now it's time for lunch. Your mother has been looking at spreadsheets for four hours, and I promised her the best lobster roll on the Atlantic coast."

Lucas laughed, rolling up the blueprint and sliding it into his backpack. "Marcus says the kitchen at the center has a new batch of fresh claws from Maine. Let's go before he eats them all!"

The three of them walked down the wide, carpeted hallway of the pier headquarters, their steps rhythmic and steady against the floorboards. The men in dark suits were gone, replaced by logistics managers, educators, and children whose laughter echoed through the open glass doors.
