Chapter 4 - WHISPERS IN THE DARK

While Ethan engaged in corporate warfare downtown, Mara stood by the window of the estate's sunroom, holding a warm mug of tea that she hadn't touched in over an hour.

Outside, the estate grounds were quiet, secured by private guards pacing the perimeter. Yet inside Mara’s chest, a storm of anxiety was raging. She looked over at Lily, who was sitting on a plush rug, playing with a wooden train set that Ethan’s staff had brought up from the estate storeroom—toys that had once belonged to Julian and Ethan when they were boys.

Lily was laughing softly, driving the red train engine around a wooden track, her small face lit up with a joy she had rarely experienced in their cramped, frugal life outside the city.

Mara felt a painful pang of guilt. Was she right to keep Lily hidden for so long? Had she denied her daughter the warmth, the comfort, and the safety that Ethan was so effortlessly providing?

Her phone, sitting on the glass coffee table, buzzed sharp and sudden.

Mara picked it up, expecting a call from Ethan's office or the legal team. Instead, the screen displayed a restricted number.

She hesitated, then answered. "Hello?"

"Mara Ellis," a harsh, raspy voice hissed through the speaker, heavily distorted by a voice modifier. "You think you're safe in that fortress, don't you?"

Mara’s breath caught in her throat. She stepped away from Lily, walking toward the far corner of the room. "Who is this?"

"It doesn't matter who I am," the voice sneered. "What matters is what you think you know about the crash on Route 9. You think Julian and Clara died in an accident? You think it was just slick ice on a mountain road?"

Mara’s hand began to shake violently. "What are you talking about?"

"Ask yourself why Clara was so terrified of the Whitmore family," the caller whispered maliciously. "Ask yourself why the brake lines on Julian’s car were never released for public inspection after the investigation was closed. If you stay with Ethan Whitmore, you are walking that little girl right into the killer's house."

"Stop it! Leave us alone!" Mara cried out, her voice breaking.

"Leave the mansion by midnight," the voice commanded coldly. "Take the child and disappear, or the next headline won't be about a haircut. It will be an obituary."

The line went dead.

Mara stood frozen, the phone slipping from her fingers and crashing onto the soft carpet. Panic seized her lungs, making it impossible to breathe. Her mind raced back to four years ago—the suddenness of the crash, the strange delays in the police report, Clara’s feverish paranoia in her final hours.

Could it be true? Was Julian’s death not a tragic accident, but an assassination?

Before Mara could sink deeper into the spiral of fear, the sunroom doors opened. Ethan stepped into the room, his tie loosened, looking tired from the board battle but carrying an air of triumph.

"Mara," Ethan called out warmly, stepping toward her. "The board meeting is over. The Langfords are done. They won't be able to—"

He stopped abruptly, noticing her pale, bloodless face and her trembling frame. His expression instantly shifted from triumph to deep concern. "Mara? What happened?"

Mara looked at him, her eyes wide with terror and mistrust. "Ethan... who investigated Julian’s crash?"

Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly. "The State Police and my family’s private security firm. Why are you asking me this right now?"

"Did you see the mechanical reports?" Mara demanded, her voice rising in desperation. "Did you personally verify that the car failed because of the weather?"

Ethan stepped closer, his hands raised in a calming gesture. "Mara, calm down. The report said the anti-lock brakes failed on the ice. It was a terrible, tragic accident. Why are you bringing this up?"

Mara pointed a trembling finger at her phone on the floor. "Someone just called me. A distorted voice. They told me... they told me the crash wasn't an accident. They said if I don't take Lily and leave tonight, she will end up like Julian."

Ethan’s face went deadly cold. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an ancient, predatory rage. He stepped past Mara, picked up her phone, and tapped the screen to check the incoming call log.

"Marcus!" Ethan roared toward the hallway.

Within three seconds, Marcus burst into the room. "Sir!"

"Someone just bypassed our secure landline relay and made a direct threat to Mara on her personal cell," Ethan growled, handing the phone to Marcus. "Trace the signal, isolate the towers, and call our cyber forensics team. I want to know who made this call within the hour."

"On it, sir!" Marcus said, taking the phone and rushing out.

Ethan turned back to Mara. He reached out and gently took her cold, shaking hands into his own. "Listen to me, Mara. Look at me."

Mara looked up into his steady grey eyes, searching for answers.

"I swear to you on my brother's memory," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a solemn, unwavering vow, "no one will touch you or Lily while I have breath in my body. If someone tampered with Julian's car four years ago... if my brother was murdered... I will tear this city apart until I find who did it. But you cannot run. Running is what they want. They want you scared, quiet, and isolated."

Mara looked down at their joined hands, feeling the strength and truth in his grasp. She looked back at Lily, who was still happily building her wooden track, blissfully ignorant of the shadows lurking outside.

"I won't run," Mara whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. "I won't let them take her home away again."

"Good," Ethan said softly, reaching up to wipe a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "Because from this day on, we fight together."
