Chapter 6 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

The defeat in the courtroom pushed the Langford family over the edge of desperation.

Three days after the custody hearing, the cyber forensics team that Ethan had hired delivered a startling piece of information to Marcus. The untraceable phone call made to Mara had been routed through an encrypted burner tower located near the docks of South Boston—a warehouse district owned by a subsidiary of the Langford Group.

Sitting in his private study late on Sunday evening, Ethan stared at a blueprint of the warehouse complex laid out across his oak desk.

"We have confirmed that Richard Langford's personal head of security, a former disgraced operative named Vance Croft, has been frequenting that warehouse for the past two weeks," Marcus reported, pointing to a highlighted section of the map. "Our informants inside the district say Croft has been moving old files and encrypted hard drives out of the building."

"Why now?" Mara asked, standing near the desk, her eyes fixed on the blueprints. She had spent the last few days in the estate, slowly adjusting to a life where she no longer had to hide, but the fear of the unknown still lingered in her dark eyes.

"Because they know we're digging into the crash from four years ago," Ethan said, looking up at her. "If Richard Langford was involved in tampering with Julian's car, the evidence—or the payoff records for the mechanic—is likely stored in those private corporate archives before they get incinerated."

"It's a trap, Ethan," Mara said softly, stepping closer, her voice laced with deep concern. "They want you to go there. They know you'll do anything to find the truth about Julian."

"I know it's a trap," Ethan said, standing up and looking into her eyes. "But sometimes, to catch a predator, you have to step into the cage."

"Ethan, no!" Mara pleaded, her hand reaching out to grab his sleeve. "You don't have to risk your life! We have Lily, we have legal protection, we have safety—"

"I cannot look at Lily every morning knowing the man who killed her father is walking free, spending his wealth, and plotting his next move against us," Ethan said gently, placing his hand over hers. "Julian deserves justice, Mara. And so do you."

Mara looked into his fierce, resolute grey eyes, seeing not just the billionaire CEO, but the brother who had carried a broken heart for four long years. She knew she couldn't stop him.

"Then take Marcus and a full team," Mara insisted, her tone firm. "Don't go alone."

"I won't," Ethan promised.

Two hours later, under the cover of a pitch-black midnight sky, three unmarked black vans pulled up two blocks away from the abandoned South Boston warehouse. Rain fell in cold, slanted sheets, slicking the cobblestone streets and reflecting the dim amber lights of the harbor docks.

Ethan, wearing a dark tactical jacket, monitored the security feeds inside the primary command van alongside Marcus.

"Thermal imaging shows three individuals inside the main office section of the warehouse," Marcus reported, adjusting his earpiece. "It looks like Croft and two armed guards. They are burning paper documents in an industrial drum."

"We move now," Ethan ordered. "Disable the power, block the perimeter exits, and secure those documents before they turn to ash."

"Yes, sir!"

The tactical team breached the side entrances of the warehouse with silent efficiency. Power to the building was severed, plunging the massive concrete structure into near-pitch darkness, illuminated only by the flickering orange glow of the burning barrel inside the central office.

Ethan stepped into the building behind Marcus, his flashlight sweeping over stacked shipping crates and rusted machinery.

Suddenly, loud metal shutters slammed down behind them, sealing the side doors with a deafening metallic screech!

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Emergency floodlights mounted on the high steel rafters flashed on, blinding Ethan and his team with harsh, white light.

High on the metal catwalk above the warehouse floor stood Richard Langford, dressed in a heavy raincoat, flanked by four armed men holding tactical rifles. Down on the floor, Croft stepped out from behind a crate, holding a remote detonator in his hand.

"You always were too arrogant for your own good, Ethan," Richard’s voice echoed over the warehouse loudspeaker, laced with manic triumph. "Did you really think my security team wouldn't spot your thermal drones?"

Ethan didn't panic. He stood his ground in the center of the spotlight, his eyes tracking Richard on the catwalk. "It's over, Richard. The police already have this building surrounded. You're adding kidnapping and attempted murder to your rap sheet."

Richard laughed—a dry, bitter sound that echoed off the corrugated steel walls. "The police won't find anything here except the tragic tragic result of an industrial explosion caused by a gas leak. A heartbroken billionaire, devastated by corporate stress, came to investigate a lead and died in an unfortunate accident."

"And what about Julian?" Ethan demanded, his voice ringing out like a thunderclap across the cavernous building. "Did you manufacture his 'accident' four years ago too?!"

Richard smiled coldly, leaning against the metal railing. "Julian was going to pull Whitmore Enterprises out of our joint energy merger. He was going to ruin my family's legacy forty-eight hours before the IPO. I couldn't let a naive idealist ruin forty years of my work."

Ethan’s heart froze. The confession was spoken so casually, so devoid of human remorse, that it chilled him to the bone. Julian was murdered.

"Croft," Richard commanded coldly, pointing down at Ethan. "End this."

Croft raised his hand to press the remote detonator to ignite the planted fuel charges around the warehouse.

BANG!

A high-powered rifle shot shattered the glass roof above the catwalk!

The bullet slammed directly into the loudspeaker unit right beside Richard's head, showering him with metal sparks and sending him tumbling backward onto the steel walkway!

Before Croft could react, the heavy main shipping doors of the warehouse were smashed open as an armored SWAT vehicle crashed through the barrier, its sirens wailing, red and blue lights flashing wildly across the dark walls!

"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP THEM NOW!"

Tactical officers poured out of the armored vehicle, lasers pinpointing every armed guard on the catwalk.

Richard Langford scrambled to his feet in terror, looking around as his guards immediately dropped their weapons and raised their hands in surrender.

Ethan slowly reached into his tactical jacket and pulled out a small, glowing digital recording unit, holding it up toward Richard with a cold, triumphant smile.

"Every word of your confession just went directly to the District Attorney's live server, Richard," Ethan shouted over the sirens. "Julian’s justice has finally arrived."

Richard fell to his knees on the catwalk, his face twisted in utter defeat as tactical officers swarmed up the stairs to place him in heavy steel handcuffs. The trap had been sprung, but it was the hunter who had been caught in the snare.
