Chapter 5 - The Lost Legacy

The room went dead silent save for the crackle of the wood in the fireplace.

Marcus dropped to his knees in front of Lily, his breath catching in his throat as he stared at the small piece of gold resting in her hand. He reached out with trembling fingers, carefully lifting the pendant from her palm. He turned it over.

Engraved on the smooth back of the gold metal were three tiny letters: C.V. - 2021.

"Where did you get this?" Marcus demanded, his voice a frantic whisper of shock and rising disbelief. "Lily... where did you get this necklace?"

"My gran gave it to me," Lily said, shrinking back slightly from his intensity. "She told me my real mother left it with her in Brooklyn when I was a baby. She told me never to sell it, no matter how hungry we got, because... because it was the only thing that proved who I was."

Marcus stared at the pendant, then looked up at the portrait of his late wife, and finally back at Lily’s small, dirt-smudged face. The shape of her hazel eyes, the high cheekbones, the faint dimple near the left corner of her mouth—features he had assumed were just coincidence now struck him with the force of a thunderbolt.

"Dr. Thorne," Marcus called out, his voice shaking violently as he turned toward his private physician who had accompanied them from the hospital. "Aris... run a rapid DNA panel. Use my saliva and a swab from Lily. Right now."

Dr. Thorne stepped forward, her eyes wide with shock. "Marcus... what are you saying? Clara’s helicopter crashed off the coast of Montauk four years ago. Her body was never recovered, but—"

"Clara was six months pregnant when her sister’s private helicopter vanished from the radar," Marcus said, tears finally overflowing his dark eyes as he looked at Lily. "We assumed... the coast guard told us no one could have survived that water."

He turned back to Lily, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated emotion.

"Lily," Marcus breathed, reaching out to gently touch her dark curls. "What was your grandmother’s name?"

"Rose," Lily whispered, her eyes filling with tears as she sensed the monumental truth shifting the room around them. "Rose Miller. She worked as a nurse in a small clinic in Montauk."

Marcus buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, sob-wracked gasp.

Clara hadn't died in the crash immediately. She had survived long enough to reach a local clinic, give birth to her unborn daughter, and hide her from the men who had sabotaged her flight—the same corporate rivals who were now hunting Ethan for the master security keys to Vance Global.
