Chapter 9 - A Feast for the Brave

Three months later.
Spring had arrived in New York City. The freezing snow and biting winds of winter had surrendered to warm sunshine, blooming cherry blossoms, and green grass across Central Park.
In the dining hall of the Vance Estate in Bedford, a massive oak table was laden with food. But it wasn't a formal corporate dinner party. It was a celebration.
Sitting around the table were Marcus, Ethan (who was now walking completely unassisted without his crutches), Mrs. Gable, Dr. Thorne, and three special guests: Old Man Joe—the homeless man who used to share his bread with Lily under the bridge—and two social workers who had helped officially complete Lily’s adoption and birth certificate restoration papers.
Lily sat at the head of the table in a yellow sundress, her brown hair tied back with a bright ribbon. Her plate was piled high with roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, and a massive slice of warm apple pie.
"To the braves girl in New York," Old Man Joe said, lifting his glass of sparkling apple cider with a shaky, weathered hand. "Who proved that even in the darkest cold, a little light can change the whole world."
"To Lily," everyone echoed, clinking their glasses together.
Lily giggled, a bright, musical sound that filled the grand dining hall with genuine joy. She reached over and handed a large box wrapped in silver ribbon to Old Man Joe.
"What's this, little one?" Joe asked, his eyes misting over.
"It's a key," Lily said proudly. "To a small apartment near the park. Dad bought the building, and you get to live there forever. No more sleeping under the bridge, Joe."
The old man stared at the key inside the box, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks as he reached out to pat Lily’s small hand. "God bless you, child. God bless you."
Marcus watched the scene from the side of the table, his arm draped comfortably over the back of Ethan’s chair.

"You okay, Dad?" Ethan asked, looking up at his father.
"I'm better than okay, buddy," Marcus said, his eyes shiny with happiness. "I'm complete."
