Chapter 2 - The Double Delivery

The world didn't just break; it dissolved.

Daniel grabbed my shoulders as my head fell back against the pillows. The monitors attached to my finger began to beep erratically as my heart rate spiked past 140. "She’s lying," Daniel roared, turning on the administrator. "She’s trying to confuse us! My wife was in that operating room for forty-five minutes! I saw them pull the baby out!"

"You saw them pull a baby out from behind the surgical drape, Mr. Hayes," Nurse Carter said, her voice dripping with ice. "You were sitting by your wife’s head. The room was crowded. Dr. Reynolds was focused on the uterine hemorrhage Emily suffered. Who handled the infant stabilization table? I did."

"That's enough," Elena Vance snapped, signaling the security officers. "Remove Nurse Carter from the floor immediately. Lock her in the administrative security office down stairs. Do not let her speak to anyone, and confiscate her personal phone."

As Carter was dragged from the room, she looked back at me over her shoulder. "Check the birthmarks, Emily. Check the left shoulder. Your sister has the matching nevus. You don't."

The door clicked shut, leaving a suffocating silence behind.

I tore the oxygen tube from my nose and scrambled to the edge of the bed. The pain in my incision felt like a hot iron being pressed into my skin, but I didn't care. "Daniel, give him to me," I gasped. "Bring him here right now."

Daniel didn't hesitate. He bypassed the administrator, lifted the swaddled baby from the plastic bassinet, and placed him gently into my trembling arms. Noah let out a soft, tiny whimpering sound as his skin touched mine. With shaking fingers, I pulled back the blue cap, then unbuttoned the top of his white cotton onesie.

There, right on the curve of his left shoulder blade, was a small, dark brown birthmark shaped like an irregular crescent moon.

My breath hitched. My sister Morgan had that exact same mark. She had spent her entire teenager years complaining about it, calling it her "curse." I didn't have it. My mother didn't have it.

"No," I whispered, tears blinding me as I pressed my face against the baby's soft cheek. The scent of him—newborn skin, formula, and hospital soap—felt so deeply ingrained in my soul that the thought of him not being mine felt like an amputation. "No, this is my baby. I felt him kick for nine months. I know his movements. I know how he reacts to Daniel's voice."

"Emily," my mother said from the corner, her voice hollow. She had sunk into the armchair, her face buried in her hands. "Marianne isn't completely lying. Morgan was here last night. She was brought into the emergency bay at 2:00 a.m. She was bleeding, Emily. She was thirty-four weeks pregnant, and she was terrified."

Daniel turned to her, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were white. "You knew? You knew Morgan was pregnant? You told us she was working at a design firm in Illinois!"

"I had to," my mother sobbed, looking up with eyes full of desperate guilt. "Morgan owes money to people you don't want to know about, Daniel. She got involved with a medical brokering agency through Marianne’s husband. They promised her they would wipe her debts if she acted as a gestational carrier for a high-profile client who needed total anonymity. But two months ago, Morgan discovered who the buyers actually were. She realized they weren't a childless couple. It was a political family using the baby for... for something horrible. A legal shield for an international trust."

"So you hid her?" I asked, the betrayal cutting deeper than the physical pain.

"I hid her at St. Jude's under a false name to keep her safe until she delivered," my mother said. "But her labor started early. I brought her here because Marianne promised she could handle the paperwork quietly, that she could list the baby as an abandoned infant and let me adopt him legally later. I didn't know... I swear to you, Emily, I didn't know Marianne was planning to switch the babies!"

"Then where is Emily's baby?" Daniel demanded, his voice shaking the glass walls. "If this is Morgan's child... where is our son?"
