Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

By midday, the hospital was surrounded by federal vehicles. The FBI’s White Collar Crime and Human Trafficking units had taken over the investigation from Detective Miller, realizing that Aegis Holdings was merely the tip of a massive, multi-state illegal surrogacy and corporate money-laundering ring.

Julian Vance was dragged from the wreckage of the helicopter with a broken arm and a concussion, his political immunity evaporating the moment the federal agents opened the silver cooler and discovered the true contents alongside a set of encrypted financial ledgers.

I sat in a private room on the secure top floor of the main hospital building, the IV line finally removed from my arm. Morgan lay in the bed next to mine, her eyes clear now, the Lorazepam completely flushed from her system.

Noah was sleeping soundly in a bassinet between us, his little hand tucked under his chin, completely unaware of the storm that had raged around his birth.

Elena Vance, the administrator, walked into the room carrying a thick stack of blue folders. She looked exhausted, her navy blazer gone, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows.

"Mrs. Hayes, Morgan," Elena said quietly, sitting at the foot of my bed. "I want to offer you the formal apologies of the entire Board of Trustees. What happened here today was a failure of our security protocols on every conceivable level. But more importantly, I want to give you the results of the official DNA testing we rushed through the lab two hours ago."

She opened the first folder. "Noah Hayes is, without a fraction of a doubt, the biological son of Emily and Daniel Hayes. The genetic match is 99.99 percent. The birthmark on his shoulder... our neonatologist checked it. It’s a completely benign vascular nevus. It has no genetic connection to Morgan's birthmark. It was purely an environmental anomaly during the first trimester."

I let out a long, shuddering breath I felt like I had been holding since 10:42 that morning. I reached over the side of the bed and squeezed Daniel’s hand, his fingers still scraped and bandaged from his fight on the roof.

"And my baby?" Morgan asked, her voice small, her eyes filling with tears as she looked at the second folder in Elena's hands.

Elena’s expression softened. "Your son died of natural causes related to extreme pulmonary underdevelopment, Morgan. There was no foul play involved in his death. Marianne Carter attempted to use his passing to facilitate a swap, but his birth was recorded accurately by a junior resident before Marianne could alter the main database. He was a real boy, Morgan. And he was loved, even for those few hours."

Morgan closed her eyes, a single tear running down her cheek as my mother wrapped her arms around her. For the first time in a year, the distance between them seemed to vanish, replaced by a shared, tragic grief that would take years to heal.

"But there’s one more thing," Elena Vance said, turning her attention to the third folder. "We searched Marianne Carter’s private office in the research wing. We found a hidden safe behind the neonatal flag display. Inside was a ledger containing the real names of the families who used Aegis Holdings over the past five years."

She looked at me, her eyes dead serious. "Emily, your name wasn't chosen at random this morning because you happened to be in labor. Marianne Carter didn't just spot an opportunity. She had your name on a list for three months."
