Chapter 6 - The Evidence of Brutality

The foyer grew so quiet you could hear the distant hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Victoria Vance—who had known Sienna since she was a university intern—strode past Garrick as if he were a piece of discarded trash, stopping directly in front of my daughter. She gently took Sienna’s uninjured hand, her eyes shining with sudden, protective tears.

"Sienna, look at me," Victoria whispered, her voice shaking with restrained rage. "Did Garrick do this to you?"

Sienna looked down at the polished marble floor, her lower lip trembling. She didn't speak, but the sheer, agonizing silence was louder than any confession.

Commissioner Fletcher stepped closer, his professional instincts instantly taking over. As a veteran law enforcement officer who had spent decades dealing with domestic violence cases, he recognized the physical markers of abuse instantly—the guarded posture, the submissive gaze, the terror of retaliation.

"Mr. Ashford," Commissioner Fletcher said, turning his cold, unflinching gaze toward Garrick. "Step forward, please."

Garrick backed away until his spine hit the living room wall. "I didn't do anything! She’s clumsy! She fell down the basement stairs! Ask my mother—she saw the whole thing!"

"I saw nothing of the sort," Miriam stammered, suddenly trying to distance herself from the lie as she realized federal investigators were standing in her hallway. "I merely... I merely remarked that young women are careless these days!"

"You said your son 'taught her a lesson' and that 'she's beginning to understand what being a wife actually means,'" I reminded Miriam, my voice carrying the weight of a prosecutor reading a signed confession into the court record. "I believe the audio recorder on my handbag was running the entire time we sat at your dinner table."

Miriam turned the color of ash. "You... you recorded us?"

"In this state, single-party consent applies when domestic abuse is suspected," I replied smoothly, tapping the leather strap of my purse. "And believe me, Commissioner Fletcher will find the audio file exceptionally illuminating."

Commissioner Fletcher motioned to the two state troopers standing behind him. "Officers, secure the perimeter. Mr. Garrick Ashford, you are being detained for questioning regarding suspected domestic battery, physical intimidation, and coercion."

"You can't do this!" Garrick screamed, losing all remaining composure as the two towering troopers stepped forward, their heavy hands gripping his shoulders with immovable authority. "I am the COO of Ashford Industries! My promotion is official tomorrow! You can't touch me! Mom! Do something!"

Miriam let out a piercing shriek, collapsing onto the marble floor in a theatrical heap. "My son! You're ruining an innocent man! This is a conspiracy!"

Marcus Sterling walked over to Garrick, pulled a heavy brass keycard from his pocket, and dropped it into the pocket of Garrick’s jacket.

"Your promotion is not official, Garrick," Marcus said, his voice dripping with absolute contempt. "In fact, as of five minutes ago, the board has voted unanimously to terminate your employment effective immediately. Clean out your desk by eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
