Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of the Ashford Estate

The next forty-eight hours moved with the relentless, crushing speed of a freight train.

By Monday morning, the financial markets had opened to a staggering corporate earthquake. The primary voting block controlled by the Bennett-Vance syndicate had officially filed public disclosure forms detailing the executive suspension and termination of Garrick Ashford due to gross moral turpitude and verified domestic violence investigations.

By noon, Ashford Industries’ stock dropped four points before stabilizing, while financial news networks ran banner headlines questioning the corporate governance and familial culture of the Ashford dynasty.

Miriam Ashford’s phone stopped ringing entirely. The country club committee members who had praised her lemon tarts and toadied up to her social standing suddenly found themselves "too busy" to return her frantic voicemail messages. The estate on Elmwood Avenue—though still technically standing—felt less like a seat of power and more like a mausoleum.

Meanwhile, at Dad’s expansive mountain estate outside the city, the atmosphere was entirely different.

The sun streamed through the wide glass windows of the sunroom, warming the hardwood floors where baby Caleb—safely retrieved from the Ashford estate late Sunday night by state child welfare officers accompanied by Commissioner Fletcher—was happily playing with a set of wooden building blocks.

Sienna sat on the comfortable linen sofa, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, sipping chamomile tea with honey. The heavy medical sling still supported her fractured radius, but the haunted, terrified shadow that had darkened her eyes for two years was finally beginning to lift.

I walked into the sunroom carrying a thick stack of legal documents and sat down on the coffee table in front of her.

"How is the arm feeling today, darling?" I asked softly, taking her hand.

Sienna managed a genuine, soft smile—the first real smile I had seen on her face in longer than I cared to remember. "It throbs when the weather changes, Mom. But... for the first time in three years, I feel like I can actually breathe."

"You never have to go back there, Sienna," I said firmly, stroking her hair. "Marcus has already filed for a full, uncontested divorce with emergency protective orders. Garrick is being held without bail pending trial for felony domestic battery and witness intimidation. And Miriam’s social circle has completely abandoned her. She’s currently trying to sell her diamond earrings to pay legal retainers."

Sienna let out a soft, watery laugh, a tear spilling over her lashes. "I was so scared, Mom. Every time I tried to speak up, he threatened to take Caleb away from me. He told me no court would ever believe an emotional, dependent housewife over an executive with his family's money."

"He forgot one vital detail," I smiled, squeezing her hand.

"What's that?"

"He forgot who raised you."
