Chapter 7 - The Desperate Hour

Desperate men do desperate things. At midnight, the security alarms in my apartment building blared. I woke up to the sound of pounding on my front door.

I grabbed a heavy iron poker from my fireplace and approached the entryway. Through the security peephole, I saw Adrian. His hair was disheveled, his clothes wrinkled, smelling heavily of alcohol.

"Evelyn! Open the door!" he screamed, banging his fists against the wood. "You took everything from me! My job, my reputation, my family’s money! My mother won't even speak to me! You ruined my life for a worthless maid!"

"Leave, Adrian, or the police will arrest you for violating the restraining order," I warned through the closed door, my phone already connected to the police dispatch.

"I gave you everything, Evelyn! We were going to be the most powerful couple in this city!" he wept, his voice shifting from rage to pathetic despair. "Please. Just drop the personal charges. I have nothing left."

"You have exactly what you deserve, Adrian," I said, my voice cold and unyielding. "You thought Rosa was worthless because she cleaned your house. Now look at you. Kneeling at my door, begging, just like she was kneeling before you. The only difference is, no one is coming to save you."

The blue and red lights of police cruisers illuminated the hallway windows. Within minutes, Adrian was tackled to the floor by three police officers, handcuffed, and dragged away in the back of a squad car, his pathetic screaming echoing down the street.
