Chapter 8 - The Shadow Chairman

For the next three days, the safe house became the headquarters of a quiet, lethal war.
Dante recovered with terrifying speed. By the second day, he was back in a dark suit, his arm in a hidden sling beneath his jacket, directing logistics operations across three continents.
Evelyn refused to stay locked in a bedroom. She joined Dante in the glass-walled strategy room, analyzing the financial dossiers Leo brought in regarding Hart Global Logistics.
"Look at this," Evelyn said on the third evening, leaning over a sprawling map of the New York harbor laid out on the mahogany table. She pointed a slender finger at a series of small shipping codes printed on a manifest.
Dante leaned over her shoulder, his chest hovering inches from her back, the scent of his cedarwood cologne wrapping around her. "What am I looking at?"
"These aren't commercial shipping codes," Evelyn said, pointing to the alphanumeric sequences. "When I worked at the bakery, we received imported butter from Normandy through Pier 17. The manifests always had a three-digit customs prefix. These have a five-digit prefix used exclusively for bonded pharmaceutical transfers."
Dante’s eyes narrowed. He looked at the manifest, then at her. "Marcus isn't using the docks for weapons. He’s using them to move illegal synthetic narcotics through legal medical supply chains."
"And he’s using my father's old mechanic shop in Queens as a distribution waypoint," Evelyn added, pulling up a tax document from the desk. "Look at the property title. When Arthur died, the shop didn't go to my mother. It was transferred to a holding company registered under 'Miller Properties'—my mother's maiden name."
Dante stood up straight, a dangerous light igniting in his dark eyes.
"He used your mother's name to sign the chemical import permits," Dante realized, his voice dropping into pure ice. "If the federal agents ever busted the operation, the paper trail wouldn't lead to Marcus Hart. It would lead directly to your mother."
Evelyn felt a wave of icy fury wash through her veins. "He tried to frame my mother for his drug cartel."
Dante walked around the table, stopping directly in front of her. He reached out, his long fingers gently cupping the back of her neck, pulling her gaze up to his.
"Tonight, Evelyn," Dante said softly, "we burn his kingdom to the ground."
"How?" she asked, her heart pounding—not with fear, but with an intoxicating, shared rage.
"Marcus thinks you're dead or hidden away in a cellar," Dante said. "He’s holding a victory gala tonight at the Plaza Hotel to celebrate his new maritime merger. He thinks he’s untouchable."

Dante leaned down, his lips brushing against her ear, sending a shudder of electricity down her spine.
"We are going to crash his party. And you, my sweet baker's daughter, are going to wear a gown that costs more than his entire life."
