Chapter 8 - EXORCISING THE GHOSTS

Two weeks after the trial ended, I returned to the house where the nightmares had occurred.

The bank had cleared all fraudulent encumbrances from the title thanks to David’s relentless civil lawsuits. The property was entirely mine again, but neither Ellie nor I ever wanted to set foot inside that house again. It was a place of dark memories and broken trust.

I had hired a professional demolition crew.

I stood on the sidewalk beside David, Aunt Eleanor, and Ellie. The morning sun was warm and bright. A massive yellow excavator sat idling in the driveway, its steel claw glistening in the light.

"Are you ready for this, Ellie?" I asked, putting my arm around her shoulder.

She took a deep breath and smiled—a genuine, radiant smile. "I've been waiting for this day."

I turned to the demolition supervisor and gave him a clear nod. "Tear it down."

The excavator's heavy engine roared to life. The massive steel claw lunged forward, smashing through the front porch of the house. Glass shattered, wood splintered, and walls crumbled into dust.

We watched in quiet satisfaction as the house where my father died and where my mother plotted her wicked schemes was reduced to rubble.

Next, the excavator moved into the backyard. The steel claw slammed down on the storage shed, crushing the wooden walls and metal roof like an aluminum can. The subterranean trapdoor was exposed, smashed, and filled in with heavy gravel and concrete.

Within six hours, the entire lot was cleared. Where a place of horrors once stood, there was now nothing but open sky and fresh brown dirt.

"What are you going to do with the land?" David asked as the dump trucks hauled away the last of the debris.

"We're selling it," I said firmly. "We're donating twenty percent of the proceeds to a charity that supports victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking. The rest will go into a college fund for our baby."

Aunt Eleanor squeezed my arm. "Your father would be so proud of you, Adrian. You saved us all."

"We saved each other," I replied gently.

That night, Ellie and I sat in our quiet apartment, looking out at the city skyline. The heavy air of terror that had hung over our lives for months was finally gone, replaced by a deep, profound peace.

"Adrian?" Ellie whispered, resting her head on my chest.

"Yes, my love?"

"The baby is moving."

I placed my hand gently on her round stomach. Beneath my palm, I felt a strong, distinct kick. Tears of joy welled in my eyes.

"He's strong," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "Just like his mother."
