Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Eviction

The next morning, the sun rose over Chicago in a dull, iron-gray haze. Richard woke up late, as usual, stepping into the kitchen in his monogrammed bathrobe, expecting his coffee to be waiting. Instead, he found the kitchen completely empty, the espresso machine dark, and his leather briefcase missing from the foyer table.

"Amanda!" he shouted up the stairs, his voice laced with annoyance. "Where did you put my keys? I have a ten o'clock presentation with the city planning commission for the lakeside project."

Vivian walked out of the guest bedroom, holding Chloe, who was crying loudly. "Richard, that woman took Ethan and left at six in the morning. She didn't even leave milk for the baby. The insolence is unbelievable. You need to file for temporary custody of the house today. We cannot live under the roof of someone so emotionally unstable."

Brooke appeared behind her, wearing one of my silk robes, looking anxious. "Richard, my credit card didn't work when I tried to order the baby’s premium formula online this morning. It said 'account restricted.'"

Richard scoffed, pulling out his phone. "It's a glitch. Amanda probably transferred funds out of the checking account out of spite. I'll handle it at the office."

When Richard arrived at the Whitman-Vance corporate tower forty minutes later, he didn't notice the two security guards standing near the executive elevator until he tried to swipe his silver access badge.

The machine emitted a sharp, high-pitched error beep. A red light flashed on the scanner.

"What is the meaning of this?" Richard snapped at the guard, a burly man named Thomas who had worked for my father for a decade. "Clean the sensor, Thomas. I'm late for a board meeting."

"Your badge has been deactivated, Mr. Whitman," Thomas said, his face expressionless, his arms crossed over his chest. "You are no longer authorized to enter the building without an escort."

"Deactivated? I am the CEO!" Richard roared, his face turning a dark, dangerous red as several junior executives stopped in the lobby to watch. "Get out of my way before I have you fired by noon!"

"He can't fire you, Thomas," my voice cut through the glass atrium.

I walked out of the executive elevator, followed by Marcus Vance and three forensic accountants from a top-tier independent auditing firm. I was wearing a tailored black suit, my hair pinned back, looking every bit like the woman who had actually managed the corporate balance sheets while Richard played golf with politicians.

"Amanda," Richard gasped, his arrogance trying to reassert itself. "What the hell is this circus? If this is about last night—"

"This is about the five hundred thousand dollars you transferred to a shell company called 'B.R. Luxury Consulting' last Tuesday, Richard," I said, handing him a thick folder of stamped documents. "And the four hundred thousand dollars in corporate funds you used to lease a luxury apartment on Michigan Avenue for your mistress."

Richard’s eyes scanned the top page, his jaw dropping as he saw the exact routing numbers and IP addresses tracked directly to his personal computer.

"Marcus," Richard stammered, turning to the lawyer. "This is a family matter. We can adjust the internal ledgers. The lakeside project is dependent on my leadership—"

"The lakeside project belongs to Calder Holdings, Richard," Marcus Vance said, stepping forward with a legal notice. "As of 8:00 a.m. today, the board has executed the emergency suspension protocol based on material financial fraud. You are suspended from all executive duties, your corporate accounts are frozen, and your authority to represent the firm has been completely revoked. You have exactly ten minutes to accompany these guards to your office, retrieve your personal cell phone and your keys, and leave the property. If you resist, the police officers waiting in the garage will escort you out in handcuffs."

Richard looked at me, the smirk finally wiped completely from his face, replaced by the panicked, hollow look of a man who realized his golden cage had just turned into a real one.
