Chapter 5 - The Discovery in the Safe

The silence that returned to the Lincoln Park house after their departure was clean, but the wounds they left behind required a deeper inspection. I spent the evening going through Richard’s old private study on the third floor—a room he had always forbidden Ethan from entering, claiming it contained "sensitive government contracts."

Now, with a legal right of entry granted by the emergency court order, I stood before the built-in mahogany bookcase. Behind a false panel of books sat a digital wall safe.

Richard had always assumed I didn't know the code. He thought I never noticed when he used his birth date combined with the anniversary of his first corporate acquisition.

I punched in the numbers: 04-12-88-14.

The safe clicked, its heavy steel door swinging open with a soft metallic sigh.

Inside were no government contracts. Instead, there were two folders. The first was a thick manila envelope containing a secondary set of financial ledgers for Whitman-Vance Development. Richard had been running a parallel accounting system for three years, shifting smaller amounts of capital—ten thousand here, fifteen thousand there—into a private offshore account in the Cayman Islands. He had been planning his exit from our marriage and the company long before Brooke ever got pregnant.

But it was the second folder that made the blood run cold in my veins.

It was a medical file from a private clinic in New York, dated five years ago—one year before Ethan was born. It contained a comprehensive fertility report for Richard Whitman. The conclusion at the bottom of the page was underlined in red ink by the chief urologist: Permanent, irreversible azoospermia due to a childhood medical complication. Patient is entirely infertile.

I sat down on the leather office chair, my breathing ragged as the room seemed to tilt on its axis.

If Richard was permanently infertile, he couldn't be Ethan’s biological father. I knew that with absolute certainty, because Ethan was the result of a long, difficult pregnancy after we were told we had conceived naturally during a holiday in Italy.

But then a secondary, more terrifying thought struck me.

If Richard was permanently infertile, he couldn't be Chloe’s biological father either.

Brooke had played him. She had discovered his deep, desperate insecurity about his legacy, got pregnant by someone else, and convinced the arrogant billionaire that she had given him the one thing his wife couldn't secure without medical intervention. Richard had destroyed his entire empire, betrayed his wife, and humiliated my son for a child that wasn't even his.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Marcus Vance immediately. "Marcus, I need you to contact the DNA diagnostics lab we use for corporate background checks. We need a court-ordered paternity test for both children. And we need it before Richard realizes what’s inside this safe."
