Chapter 6 - The Betrayal on the Stand

Matthew walked to the witness stand with his head bowed, unable to meet the burning glares directed at him from Margaret and Ashley. He took the oath, his voice trembling as he swore to tell the truth.
"State your full name for the record," the court clerk instructed.
"Matthew... Matthew James Sterling," he stammered, raising his hand nervously to adjust his tie.
Deputy DA Sarah Jenkins stepped up to the podium, holding a stack of logged financial documents.
"Mr. Sterling," Jenkins began, her tone measured and calm. "What is your relationship to the defendants, Margaret Sterling and Ashley Sterling-Vance?"
"Margaret is my mother," Matthew whispered, staring at his shoes. "Ashley is my older sister."
"And what was your role in Bellweather Holdings?"
Matthew swallowed hard, his hands tightly gripping the edges of the wooden witness stand. "I... I was listed as a vice president. But I didn't set up the company. Ashley and Richard came to me three years ago. They said Daniel was making tens of millions in Asia and wasn't sharing it with the family. They said he was building a new life and didn't care about us anymore."
"And what did they ask you to do?"
"They asked me to open bank accounts under my name in Delaware and the Cayman Islands," Matthew said, tears beginning to well in his eyes. "They said the money transferred into those accounts was just 'family distribution funds.' I didn't know it was stolen from Daniel's corporate accounts at first... but then, two years ago, I realized what was really happening."
"And when you realized the money was stolen through forged signatures, what did you do?" Jenkins pressed.
"I tried to stop!" Matthew cried out, looking up for the first time. "I told Ashley I wanted out! But she... she threatened me!"
"How did she threaten you?"
Matthew turned his head slowly, looking directly at Ashley, whose face was twisted in a snarl of rage.
"Ashley told me that if I said anything to Daniel or the police, she and Mother would tell the authorities that I was the one who poisoned Father," Matthew confessed, his voice breaking into deep sobs. "She said they had written proof that I bought the digitalis. It was a lie! I didn't even know Father was being poisoned until he died! But I was terrified, so I did whatever they told me to do!"
Chaos broke out at the defense table.
"You coward!" Ashley shrieked, jumping out of her chair before her attorney could grab her arm. "You lying little rat! You took millions! You bought sports cars and penthouses with that money!"
"Order in the court!" Judge Vance slammed his gavel repeatedly, his face red with anger. "Mrs. Vance, sit down immediately or I will have you removed from this courtroom and held in contempt!"
Bailiffs moved in, physically forcing Ashley back into her leather chair. Margaret sat beside her, her hands clenching into tight fists, her eyes fixed on Matthew with a terrifying, icy hatred.
"Mr. Sterling," Jenkins continued once order was restored, her voice sharp and uncompromising. "Did you ever witness the treatment of Emily Sterling at the Beverly Hills estate?"
Matthew wiped his eyes with the back of his sleeve. "Yes."
"Describe what you saw."
"Mother and Ashley treated her like a servant," Matthew said, his head dropping again in shame. "They took her cell phone and driver's license. Ashley told the house staff that Emily was delusional and wasn't allowed outside without an escort. I saw Ashley force Emily to clean the garage with bleach for six hours straight because Emily tried to write a letter to Daniel. I... I saw Ashley slap her across the face when Emily begged to call a doctor."
In the gallery, several jurors leaned forward, their expressions hardening into disgusted glares directed at Ashley.
"And did you ever try to help her, Matthew?" Jenkins asked gently.
Matthew looked across the courtroom at Emily. His eyes were filled with overwhelming remorse.
"No," Matthew wept, shaking his head. "I was a coward. I took my monthly check, turned my head, and pretended it wasn't happening. I am so sorry, Emily. I am so, so sorry."
Emily stared at Matthew from our table. She didn't smile, nor did she show anger. She simply gave him a single, solemn nod—an acknowledgment of his confession, but not a granting of forgiveness.
"No further questions, Your Honor," Jenkins said, walking back to the prosecution table.
Gerald Vance, Margaret’s defense attorney, stepped up for cross-examination, but his tone was defensive and aggressive. He attempted to paint Matthew as a greedy addict who was lying to save his own skin under a plea deal, but Matthew stuck to his testimony, refusing to back down under the pressure.
When Matthew finally stepped down from the witness stand, the defense's foundation had been smashed into dust.

As the court recessed for lunch, Laura leaned over to me with a satisfied smile. "Matthew's testimony just established the conspiracy element without a shadow of a doubt. Tomorrow, when Emily takes the stand, it's over for them."
I held Emily's hand as we walked through the secure back exit of the courthouse. The storm of justice was gathering, and my family was about to be completely consumed by it.
