Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a record time for a complex trial involving corporate fraud, racketeering, attempted murder, and first-degree homicide.
At 3:00 PM on Friday afternoon, the courtroom bell rang three times, signaling that a verdict had been reached.
The air in Department 102 was suffocatingly tense as the jury filed back into their seats. Margaret sat rigid at the defense table, her hands clenched so tightly her knuckles were white. Ashley was hyperventilating, her eyes wide with terror, while Richard stared blankly at the floor.
"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Vance asked, leaning over his high wooden bench.
"We have, Your Honor," the jury foreperson, a tall woman with stern eyes, announced, handing a stack of paper forms to the bailiff.
The bailiff passed the forms to the judge, who reviewed them in silent concentration for two long minutes before handing them back to the clerk.
"The defendants will rise for the reading of the verdict," Judge Vance commanded.
Margaret, Ashley, and Richard stood up slowly, flanked by their defense attorneys.
The court clerk cleared her throat, her voice echoing through the silent room.
"In the matter of The People of the State of California versus Margaret Sterling: On Count One, First-Degree Murder in the death of Charles Sterling... we find the defendant GUILTY."
A collective sharp intake of breath echoed through the gallery. Margaret didn't scream; her knees simply gave out, and she sank heavily back into her chair, her face grey as ash.
"On Count Two, Grand Larceny and Embezzlement... GUILTY. On Count Three, Corporate Fraud... GUILTY. On Count Four, Torture and Abuse... GUILTY."
The clerk continued, reading through the long list of charges.
"In the matter of Ashley Sterling-Vance: On Count One, Grand Larceny... GUILTY. On Count Two, Wire Fraud and Conspiracy... GUILTY. On Count Three, Torture and False Imprisonment... GUILTY."
Ashley let out a piercing scream, collapsing against her attorney's shoulder, sobbing hysterically as the reality of her long prison sentence crashed down upon her.
"In the matter of Richard Vance: On Count One, Corporate Racketeering... GUILTY. On Count Two, Campaign Finance Fraud... GUILTY."
"Order in the court!" Judge Vance slammed his gavel down over the cries and murmurs. He looked down at the convicted defendants with cold, unyielding judgment.
"Margaret Sterling," Judge Vance declared, his voice booming across the room. "For the crime of first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and heinous human cruelty, this court sentences you to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the California Institution for Women. You will die behind bars."
Margaret stared blindly ahead, her mind completely shattered by the finality of her sentence.
"Ashley Sterling-Vance," the judge continued. "You are sentenced to twenty-five years in state prison without eligibility for early probation. Richard Vance, you are sentenced to fifteen years in federal custody."
The bailiffs stepped forward immediately, snapping heavy iron handcuffs around the wrists of Margaret, Ashley, and Richard.
As Ashley was led away, weeping and begging for mercy, she looked back at me one last time. "Daniel! Please! Help me! I'm your sister!"

I didn't answer. I didn't even blink. I simply turned away, taking Emily's hand in mine.
The justice system had done its work. The dark legacy of greed, violence, and deceit had been burned away, leaving nothing behind but the ashes of their own creation.
