Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The morning sun broke over the Beverly Hills estate, casting long, golden light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master bedroom. For the first time in five years, I woke up with Emily sleeping peacefully beside me.
Her face was soft in slumber, free from the deep lines of terror that had marred her features the day before. Yet, even in sleep, her hand held tightly onto mine, her knuckles white as if sub-consciously afraid that if she let go, I would vanish back to Europe, leaving her to the mercy of my family.
I carefully disengaged my hand, kissing her forehead before slipping out of bed.
Downstairs, the house was remarkably quiet. Yesterday, Arthur's security team had cleared out all the fake friends, sycophants, and corrupt staff members that Margaret had hired to turn our home into her personal pleasure palace. Only a small, elite security detail and a newly vetted, highly professional housekeeping team remained.
I walked into the study, where my chief legal counsel, Marcus Sterling, was already waiting. Marcus was a legendary corporate attorney—a tall, grey-haired man with eyes like a hawk and a reputation for crushing opponents in court.
"Good morning, Daniel," Marcus said, setting down a cup of black coffee. "I've been going through the records your security team retrieved from Margaret's private quarters last night. It's... worse than we thought."
I sat down behind the dark oak desk, folding my hands. "Tell me everything, Marcus."
Marcus opened a thick, red legal dossier. "Your mother and brother didn't just steal operational funds. They actively falsified legal documents. Three years ago, while you were recovering in that Zurich hospital after the highway crash, Margaret presented a forged medical power of attorney to your primary bank. She claimed you were permanently incapacitated."
My eyes narrowed. "And the bank accepted it?"
"The branch manager was a personal friend of Michael's," Marcus explained grimly. "We're already filing suit against the bank for gross negligence. But using that power of attorney, Margaret systematically began transferring assets out of your name and into a series of shell companies controlled by Ashley's husband, Greg."
"How much did they siphon?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
"Direct cash transfers total roughly twelve million dollars," Marcus said. "Furthermore, they mortgaged two of your commercial real estate properties in downtown Los Angeles to fund Michael's failed tech venture. Total liabilities created under your name: approximately twenty-five million."
I let out a low breath, leaning back in my chair. Twenty-five million was a staggering amount, even for someone of my net worth, but the money wasn't what truly enraged me.
"What about Emily's personal assets?" I asked.
Marcus's expression softened with genuine sympathy. "That's the most sinister part, Daniel. Emily didn't just suffer physical isolation. They forced her to sign a legal relinquishment of her marital asset rights."
I stood up so fast my leather chair rolled backward, slamming against the bookshelf behind me. "What?!"
"They told her you were filing for divorce," Marcus said quietly. "They brought in a fake lawyer who presented her with papers claiming that you were abandoning her, and that if she didn't sign over her rights to the estate, she would be liable for millions of dollars in corporate debt you allegedly incurred. She thought she was protecting you from financial ruin by taking on the debt herself."
"They tricked her into signing her own life away," I whispered, the rage burning so hot in my chest I could barely draw air into my lungs. "They ruined her spirit, made her work like a servant, and convinced her I hated her... all so they could lock up her legal standing."
"Legally, those documents are completely void due to coercion and fraud," Marcus reassured me quickly. "I've already filed an emergency injunction with the Superior Court. By noon today, all bank accounts associated with Margaret, Michael, Ashley, and Greg will be frozen solid. They won't be able to buy a cup of coffee without court authorization."
"Good," I said, walking over to the window that looked out over the expansive gardens. "Do not offer them a settlement, Marcus. I don't want a civil compromise. I want criminal charges. Grand larceny, identity theft, fraud, and unlawful detainment."
"I'm already working with the District Attorney's office," Marcus confirmed. "However, Daniel... you should know that Michael isn't going down without a fight. My sources tell me he contacted several tabloid journalists last night. They're planning to run a story claiming you came home, brutally assaulted him, and threw your elderly mother onto the street."
I turned back to Marcus, a cold, sharp smile playing on my lips. "Let them run it. In fact, invite the press to the house tomorrow morning."
Marcus raised an eyebrow. "You want to address them publicly?"
"No," I replied, my eyes gleaming with cold intent. "I want to show them the truth. I want the entire world to see what my family did to my wife. If they want a public war, Marcus, I'm going to give them a execution."
Just then, the door to the study opened slowly. Emily stood in the doorway, wearing a soft, oversized sweater I had bought her years ago. She looked tiny, fragile, but for the first time in days, her eyes were clear and focused.
"Daniel?" she said softly.
I immediately dismissed Marcus with a nod, walking over to Emily and taking her into my arms. "How are you feeling, my love?"
"I heard you talking," she whispered, looking up into my eyes. "Is it true? Are they trying to tell people you hurt them?"
"They're desperate, Emily," I said gently, stroking her hair. "When parasites lose their host, they fight dirty. But you don't need to worry about them anymore. I'm going to handle everything."
"No," Emily said firmly.
I blinked, surprised by the sudden strength in her voice.
She took a step back, looking directly into my eyes. "For two years, Daniel, I let them make me feel weak. I let them convince me I was nothing without them, that I was a burden to you. I hid in the shadows because I was afraid. But I'm not going to hide anymore."
"Emily, you don't have to face the press or the courts," I urged softly. "You've been through enough."
"I want to face them," she said, her voice trembling slightly, but holding an underlying core of steel that I hadn't seen since our early days together. "They tried to delete me from your life, Daniel. They tried to erase my existence. I want to stand beside you when you tear their world down."

Looking at her—damaged, bruised, but unbroken—a profound sense of pride washed over me. The sweet, resilient woman I had fallen in love with wasn't gone. She had just been waiting for me to come home and stand by her side.
"Alright," I whispered, pulling her close and kissing her forehead. "We do it together."
