Chapter 5 - The Desperate Strike

The fallout from the press conference was swift and catastrophic for my family.
By mid-afternoon, the video footage of Emily in the service kitchen had gone viral globally, generating hundreds of millions of views. The public backlash was merciless. Brands that had sponsored Ashley's social media accounts severed ties immediately. Michael's tech venture was abandoned by every investor overnight, and local high-society clubs revoked Margaret's memberships without hesitation.
Driven out of their luxury hotel after their credit cards were officially frozen by court order, Margaret, Michael, and Ashley found themselves holed up in a cheap motel on the outskirts of the city, panicking as the reality of their situation closed in around them.
Inside the cramped motel room, the air was thick with tension and the smell of stale tobacco.
"You said he wouldn't have security footage!" Ashley shrieked at Michael, pacing back and forth across the stained carpet. "You said the outdoor cameras were turned off!"
"How was I supposed to know the system auto-backed up to his private cloud account?!" Michael slammed his hand against the cheap wooden desk, his jaw still heavily bruised and swollen. "He set us up! He's been tracking us for months!"
Margaret sat on the edge of the saggy bed, her designer clothes wrinkled, her eyes wide with a mixture of rage and terror. "My own son... put my face on national television! He humiliated me! After everything I sacrificed to raise him!"
"Mom, shut up about raising him!" Ashley snapped. "The police are looking for us! Greg already packed his bags and left for Texas because he didn't want to get dragged into the fraud charges! We have no money, no cars, and nowhere to go!"
Michael's eyes darkened as he stared at the small television screen in the corner of the room, which was showing a news segment detailing their pending arrest warrants.
"We still have one card left to play," Michael muttered, his voice dropping to a dangerous register.
Margaret looked up, her brow furrowing. "What are you talking about, Michael? The lawyer said all our assets are frozen. If the police find us, we're going to prison."
"Daniel won't let us go to prison if he has to save her," Michael said, a dark, sinister smile slowly spreading across his face.
Ashley froze, looking at her brother with horror. "Michael... what are you planning?"
"Daniel cares about one thing in this world: Emily," Michael said, standing up and reaching into his leather jacket, pulling out a unregistered handgun he had bought off an associate years ago. "He thinks he's won. He thinks he's sitting up in his Beverly Hills fortress, completely safe behind his security guards. But he forgets that I still have the master security codes to the service tunnels under the estate."
"Michael, no!" Margaret gasped, standing up and grabbing his arm. "That's crazy! If you get caught—"
"If we get caught now, we spend the rest of our lives in prison anyway!" Michael yelled, shaking his mother off. "We take Emily. We get her out of the house through the old utility tunnels, and we demand fifty million dollars and safe passage out of the country. Daniel will pay it without thinking twice. He'd trade his entire net worth for that pathetic little girl."
Ashley swallowed hard, looking at the gun in her brother's hand. Fear wrestled with greed in her eyes, but the thought of spending decades in a state penitentiary quickly won out.
"How do we get past Arthur's security team?" Ashley asked softly.
"The shift change happens at midnight," Michael said, checking his watch. "The guard at the rear service gate steps away for ten minutes to clear the perimeter. That's all the time we need."
Meanwhile, at the estate, the mood was vastly different.
The heavy cloud of fear that had hung over the house for years was finally beginning to dissipate. Emily spent the afternoon walking through the gardens, taking deep breaths of fresh air, feeling the sun on her skin without the terrifying expectation of being yelled at or forced into labor.
I joined her by the fountain in the central courtyard, carrying two cups of warm tea.
"You look more like yourself today," I said gently, handing her a cup.
"I feel like I'm waking up from a long nightmare," she murmured, taking a sip. "It's strange, Daniel. For so long, I thought I was losing my mind. Having you stand beside me yesterday... it gave me back my voice."
"No one will ever take it from you again," I promised, sitting beside her on the stone bench. "Marcus told me the District Attorney is signing the formal indictment papers tomorrow morning. By this time tomorrow, Margaret, Michael, and Ashley will be in custody."
Emily closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh. "I don't take joy in seeing your family go to prison, Daniel. But they are dangerous. They don't see other people as human—they only see what they can take from them."
"I know," I said softly, stroking her hand. "That's why they can never be allowed near you again."
Night fell over Beverly Hills, casting deep shadows across the expansive grounds. Arthur had doubled the internal perimeter patrols, but the storm brewing outside was closer than any of us anticipated.
At precisely 11:45 PM, a dark SUV pulled up into the unlit alleyway bordering the western edge of my property. Three figures slipped out of the vehicle, draped in black coats, moving quietly through the dense foliage toward the concrete service entrance hidden beneath the hill.
Michael pulled out an old electronic key card—one he had quietly duplicated months prior—and swiped it through the rusted scanner beside the reinforced iron door.
The small light flickered from red to green with a soft, mechanical click.
"It worked," Michael whispered, turning to Margaret and Ashley behind him. "Stay close. Once we're inside the utility basement, we take the service elevator directly to the master suite wing."
They slipped inside the dark concrete tunnel, unaware that the moment the keycard was swiped, a silent alarm registered on the primary security console inside Arthur's control room.
Arthur stared at the blinking red light on his monitor, his eyes narrowing.
"Utility entrance three just breached," Arthur said into his radio, his voice calm and clinical. "All units, lock down the main house immediately. Secure Mr. and Mrs. Vance in the safe room."

He reached for his jacket, pulling a heavy tactical pistol from his holster.
"Let's go catch some rats," Arthur said to his men.
