Chapter 3 - The System's Betrayal

The news of the "Cedar Rapids Nursery Captivity" broke across local media within a week, turning the Carter family drama into a nightmare spotlight.
While Hannah and Noah were finally discharged from the hospital, returning to a home that felt tainted by evil, the legal battle was escalating at a terrifying speed.
Ethan immediately hired Evelyn Reed, a formidable victim's rights attorney, to represent their family as civil litigators and to assist the D.A.
Sitting in Evelyn’s high-rise office downtown, Ethan and Hannah faced a grim reality.
"Richard Vance is a dirty player," Evelyn warned them, sliding a motion across the glass conference table. "He just filed an emergency motion for bail, claiming that Diane Carter is a elderly woman with severe heart conditions who cannot survive in county jail. More dangerously, he’s filing a cross-petition claiming Hannah suffers from severe, violent Postpartum Psychosis."
"What?!" Hannah stood up, her hand instantly going to her belly, which was still healing from her complicated labor. "That's a complete lie! I was tied to a bed! I have the scars!"
"Vance is arguing that you inflicted those injuries on yourself during a psychotic break," Evelyn explained calmly, though her eyes flared with disgust. "He’s claiming Diane and Brittany only locked the door to protect the baby from you while they went to get help, and that you dragged yourself into the state of dehydration out of self-neglect."
"That's absurd!" Ethan slammed his fist on the table. "We have the security camera footage! We have the forged guardianship papers!"
"The forged papers are the real problem, Ethan," Evelyn said quietly. "Vance is claiming that you signed those papers weeks ago because you were planning on leaving Hannah due to her alleged mental instability. He's trying to turn this into a 'he-said, she-said' domestic dispute to sway a jury."
The door to the conference room opened, and Evelyn’s assistant leaned in. "Evelyn, Judge Thomas just signed the bail order."
Ethan froze. "Bail? For attempted murder?!"
"Bail was set at five hundred thousand dollars," the assistant reported. "Diane’s bond was just posted by an anonymous third party. She’s being released on house arrest with an ankle monitor in two hours."
Ethan felt like he was drowning. The system that was supposed to protect his innocent wife and newborn baby was allowing his tormentor to walk out of jail.
"Who posted the bond?" Ethan demanded, stepping toward the assistant. "Who gave her half a million dollars?!"
"We checked the clerk's filing," the assistant said nervously. "The bond was posted by a real estate holding company registered to... Julian Vance."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "Julian Vance? Is he related to her lawyer?"
"Julian Vance is Richard Vance's brother," Evelyn said, her expression instantly darkening. "He’s an unscrupulous real estate speculator who specializes in acquiring distressed properties through predatory loans. Why would Julian Vance post bail for your mother?"
Ethan’s mind raced back to his mother’s obsession over the house.
“It’s for family,” she had kept saying months ago. “Your wife could leave tomorrow. Put the house in my name.”
Suddenly, the pieces connected in Ethan’s mind like a grotesque jigsaw puzzle. Diane hadn't acted alone. She had promised Julian Vance a cut of Ethan and Hannah’s property and assets in exchange for financing her legal defense and legal schemes. It wasn't just a mother's insane jealousy—it was an organized financial ring targeting young, vulnerable couples.

"They're after the house," Ethan whispered, horror washing over him. "My mother didn't just want Noah. She promised Julian Vance our home and our life insurance policies to pay off her debts."
"If that's true," Evelyn said, standing up and grabbing her briefcase, "then this isn't just a domestic abuse case anymore. This is racketeering, conspiracy, and fraud. And we are going to tear their network apart."
