Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Reckoning

After two weeks of crushing evidence, wiretap recordings, and expert testimony, the trial reached its dramatic conclusion.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours—one of the fastest deliberations in federal court history for a complex RICO trial.

The courtroom was dead silent as Judge Robert Vance (no relation) took his place on the bench.

"Will the defendants please stand," Judge Vance ordered.

Diane, Brittany, and Julian Vance stood up. Brittany was sobbing quietly, her hands shaking violently, while Diane stood rigid, her lips pressed into a thin, bitter line, still holding onto the delusion that her maternal status would protect her.

"Members of the jury, have you reached a unanimous verdict?"

"We have, Your Honor," the jury foreman stood up, holding a paper.

"On Count One: Federal Conspiracy to Commit Kidnapping and Unlawful Imprisonment... how do you find the defendants?"

"Guilty for all three defendants," the foreman read clearly.

"On Count Two: Felony Child Endangerment and Deprivation of Life Necessities..."

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Federal Racketeering and Fraud..."

"Guilty."

"On Count Four: Aggravated Physical Abuse and Felony Assault..."

"Guilty."

With every "Guilty" that echoed through the room, Brittany gasped for air, eventually collapsing back into her chair, burying her face in her hands. Julian Vance stared blankly at the floor, knowing his life's predatory empire was completely erased.

Diane stood frozen. Her eyes widened in absolute shock as the reality of her total defeat smashed through her arrogance.

Judge Vance adjusted his glasses and looked down at the convicted felons with cold disgust.

"In my thirty years on the federal bench," Judge Vance said, his stern voice echoing through the quiet room, "I have rarely witnessed a display of domestic evil as cold-blooded and unnatural as the actions of Diane and Brittany Carter. A mother's duty is to protect her child; instead, you treated your son's family like prey to be harvested for financial gain."

Judge Vance picked up his sentencing documents.

"For the charges of RICO conspiracy, felony kidnapping, child abuse, and fraud: I sentence you, Julian Vance, to twenty-five years in federal prison without parole."

Julian lowered his head as marshals handcuffed him.

"I sentence you, Brittany Carter, to fifteen years in federal prison."

Brittany let out a loud, hysterical scream as marshals escorted her away.

Finally, Judge Vance turned his gaze toward Diane, who was trembling, her hands clutching the table.

"And for you, Diane Carter... the mastermind of this horrific plot, who showed no remorse, no humanity, and no maternal warmth... I sentence you to thirty-five years in a high-security federal penitentiary. Given your age, this is effectively a life sentence. You will spend the remainder of your natural days in a cell, removed from the society you sought to terrorize."

BANG!

"Court is adjourned."

Diane was immediately surrounded by federal marshals. As they snapped heavy iron chains around her waist and wrists, she turned toward Ethan, her eyes wild with terror.

"Ethan!" she shrieked, tears finally bursting through her makeup. "Ethan, tell them to stop! I'm your mother! You can't let them do this to me! ETHAN! FORGIVE ME!"

Ethan stood beside Hannah, holding six-month-old Noah safely in his arms. He looked at the woman who had brought him into the world—the woman who had tried to murder his wife and steal his son.

He didn't scream. He didn't gloat.

Ethan simply raised his hand, gently covered baby Noah’s ears so the child wouldn't hear the toxic screams, and turned his back on her forever as the steel doors closed behind her.
