Chapter 5 - THE SINKING SHIP

By nightfall, the consequences of Brandon’s greed rippled across San Bernardino and into the financial districts of Los Angeles.
I sat on the living room sofa with Skylar, watching her build a sprawling lego castle on the coffee table. The house was quiet, peaceful, and warm. For the first time in years, the crushing weight of walking on eggshells in my own home was entirely gone.
My phone chimed with a news alert from a local business blog: Senior Broker at Apex Capital Solutions Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Mortgage Fraud Scheme.
I clicked the link. The article featured a high-resolution mugshot of Caroline Voss, looking disheveled and frantic in a orange jumpsuit, alongside details of the investigation. The district attorney had uncovered that Caroline and Apex Capital had been running a systematic fraud ring—targeting high-value residential properties across Southern California by exploiting family disputes and facilitating forged Quitclaim deeds.
Brandon’s foolish ambition hadn't just gotten him caught; it had inadvertently blown the whistle on a regional criminal syndicate.
Twenty minutes later, my desk phone chimed with an incoming email from the HR director at Brandon’s former employer—a mid-tier logistics firm where he had worked as an associate manager.
Dear Mrs. Sterling, We are writing to inform you that following an emergency internal audit triggered by recent legal developments, Mr. Brandon Sterling's employment has been terminated effective immediately due to gross misconduct and unauthorized access to company accounts.
He had lost his job. His credentials were gone. His reputation in the industry was completely pulverized.
Around eight PM, my doorbell rang.
I checked the security camera on my phone. Standing on the porch was Evelyn Sterling—Brandon’s aunt, Gertrude’s estranged younger sister. Unlike Gertrude, Evelyn was a quiet, decent woman who had cut ties with her sister years ago over Gertrude’s relentless narcissism and financial greed.
I opened the door. Evelyn stood there holding a homemade peach cobbler and a small card. Her face was lined with deep sorrow and embarrassment.
"Charlotte," Evelyn said softly, her voice trembling. "I... I saw the news. I heard what happened."
"Evelyn," I said, stepping aside. "Come in."
Evelyn walked into the sunroom, looking around at the clean, quiet house. She set the cobbler on the counter and looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"I am so, so sorry," Evelyn whispered, taking my hands. "I knew Gertrude was a monster—she drained our parents' estate thirty years ago and left me with nothing—but I never imagined she would do something so sick to a child. To little Skylar."
"Gertrude didn't act alone, Evelyn," I said gently. "Brandon was the one who signed the papers. He was the one who watched his daughter eat instant noodles while he ate crab."
"He’s his mother's son," Evelyn said bitterly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "I tried to warn you years ago, Charlotte. When you two got married, Gertrude told the whole family that Brandon had 'hit the jackpot' because you had an inheritance and a good career. She treated you like an investment property from day one."
Hearing those words out loud didn't hurt. It simply confirmed what I had spent six months uncovering.
"Where are they now?" I asked.
"In the county jail," Evelyn said. "Gertrude called me from the detention center an hour ago, screaming at me to post her bail. Five hundred thousand dollars for the fraud charges. I hung up on her."
A cold sense of satisfaction settled in my chest. Gertrude, who had spent her entire life using people as financial stepping stones, had finally hit a wall that money couldn't buy her way out of—because the only person who had ever provided that money was the daughter-in-law she had tried to destroy.
"What will you do now, Charlotte?" Evelyn asked softly.

I looked over at Skylar, who was sitting on the carpet, humming a song as she placed the final lego piece on top of her colorful castle tower.
"I’m going to rebuild," I said. "For my daughter. And this time, the foundation is going to be unbreakable."
