Chapter 8 - THE RECONSTRUCTION

Over the next six months, the legal and financial web spun by Brandon, Gertrude, and Caroline was systematically unraveled in court.
With the assistance of Marcus Vance and Sarah’s forensic accounting team, every dollar stolen from my accounts was traced. Because the fraud involved a licensed financial entity—Apex Capital Solutions—Apex’s corporate insurance policy was forced to pay a full restitution settlement of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars to clear their legal liability.
I used the settlement to pay off the remaining mortgage on my grandfather's house, making it completely debt-free forever.
I also established an irrevocable educational trust for Skylar, funded with three hundred thousand dollars, ensuring that her future, her college education, and her security were permanently protected from any outside interference.
Brandon pleaded guilty to reduced charges of felony grand theft and mortgage fraud. He was sentenced to four years at the California Institution for Men in Chino.
Gertrude, having aggravated her charges with assault on an officer and protective order violations, received a six-year sentence at the California Institution for Women.
Hailey, who cooperated with prosecutors to avoid state prison, was granted three years of felony probation, ordered to complete five hundred hours of community service, and forced to pay full restitution for the funds she had accepted via Venmo.
On a warm afternoon in late spring, I stood in the backyard of my house.
A team of local contractors—legitimate, honest craftsmen recommended by my firm—were finishing the construction of a beautiful glass conservatory attached to the sunroom. It was filled with white orchids, comfortable wicker furniture, and a large dining table made of solid oak.
Skylar was sitting at the table, surrounded by her friends from school. They were celebrating her twelfth birthday.
The table was piled high with delicious food: grilled chicken, fresh summer berries, sparkling apple cider, and a massive homemade chocolate cake topped with twelve burning candles.
I walked over to the table and set a plate of hot, fresh pastries in the center.
Skylar looked up at me, her face glowing with health, happiness, and absolute security. Her eyes were no longer cautious; her shoulders were no longer hunched. She was a child who knew she was loved, cherished, and entirely safe.

"Mom," Skylar said, smiling brightly as she wrapped her arms around my waist. "This is the best birthday ever."
I kissed the top of her head, inhaling the clean, sweet scent of her shampoo. "You deserve the best of everything, sweetheart. Always."
