Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Ashley

Two weeks later, the grand jury convened at the Franklin County Courthouse.

The prosecution’s case against Linda Miller was airtight, bolstered by the overwhelming physical evidence, hospital toxicology reports, IP address tracking, and Ashley Miller’s sworn state testimony.

In exchange for avoiding a life sentence on attempted murder and aggravated child abuse charges, my sister Ashley agreed to testify against our mother in court.

I sat in the second row of the gallery beside Emily, holding her hand tightly as Ashley was brought into the courtroom in leg fetters.

Ashley looked hollow. Her arrogance had completely evaporated, replaced by the crushing reality of two decades in a state penitentiary.

When the prosecutor called her to the stand, Ashley refused to look in our direction.

"Miss Miller," the assistant prosecutor began, standing at the lectern. "Please state for the court whose idea it was to administer prescription sedatives to Emily Miller."

"My mother's," Ashley said, her voice barely audible. "Linda's."

"And why did she want Emily sedated?"

"Because..." Ashley swallowed hard, her fingers twisting her jumpsuit fabric. "Because Emily was too alert. If she was conscious, she would notice that we weren't feeding the baby proper formula. She would notice that we were taking her personal documents, her social security card, and her marriage certificate from the bedroom safe."

"What was the ultimate goal of taking those documents?" the prosecutor pressed.

"We needed to establish that Emily was incapacitated so the court would grant my mother emergency custody of Noah," Ashley confessed, tears running down her cheeks. "Once my mother had custody, we could claim the forty-thousand-dollar state adoption and kinship subsidy, access Ethan’s company trust fund, and use the child support payments to cover the debt from the LLC."

"And what was supposed to happen to baby Noah while he was in your care?"

Ashley’s head dropped lower. "My mother said... she said if the baby got sick, it would look even better for our court case. It would prove that Emily was neglecting him before we took over. We intentionally let his fever rise for two days before Ethan came home."

A collective gasp echoed across the packed courtroom. Several jurors covered their mouths in horror.

"We didn't mean for him to almost die!" Ashley sobbed uncontrollably on the stand. "Mom said babies are resilient! She said he just needed to look bad enough for the paramedics to take him away from Emily!"

On the defense side of the table, Linda sat in stone-cold silence. She didn't cry. She didn't show remorse. She simply glared at her daughter with a terrifying, unyielding malice.

That evening, the grand jury returned a multi-count felony indictment against Linda Miller:

Attempted First-Degree Murder of Noah Miller

Aggravated Child Endangerment Causing Serious Physical Harm

Felonious Assault and Illegal Administration of a Controlled Substance

Grand Larceny and Corporate Embezzlement
