Chapter 10 - The Family We Chose

That evening, after the guests had left and the sun began to dip below the horizon in shades of pink and brilliant gold, we sat on the front porch of our home.
Mr. Harris sat in the rocking chair beside us, sipping a cup of coffee while watching Noah crawl across a thick soft rug on the porch floor.
Over the last six months, Mr. Harris had become the grandfather Noah truly deserved. He helped me build a wooden crib, checked on our house whenever we were away, and joined us for Sunday family dinners.
"He's got your eyes, Ethan," Mr. Harris chuckled, watching Noah grab a brightly colored ball and laugh triumphantly. "And your wife's sweet spirit."
"He's the best of both of us," I said, holding Emily’s hand in mine.
Emily rested her head on my shoulder as the cool evening breeze rustled the leaves of the oak tree in our front yard.
"Ethan?" she whispered softly.
"Yeah, sweetie?"
"When you came through that bedroom door six months ago," she said, her voice filled with deep emotion, "I thought my life was over. I thought we were going to lose everything."
I turned my head and kissed her forehead softly.
"I promised you in the hospital that I would protect this family," I said. "And I will spend every day of the rest of my life keeping that promise."
Noah let out a happy, high-pitched giggle, rolling over onto his back and kicking his tiny feet into the air under the warm porch light.

We hadn't just survived the dark.
We had destroyed the lies, brought the monsters to justice, and built a sanctuary of love, trust, and light that no one could ever take away from us again.
