Chapter 10 - The Garden of Spring

One year later. May 14th.

The sun was brilliant and warm, shining down over the pristine blue waters of the lake.

The lake cabin—fully restored, freshly painted in warm cedar tones, and decorated with bright red geraniums along the porch—was filled with the sweet scent of pine trees and fresh morning air.

In the backyard overlooking the wooden dock, a long table was set for a seventy-ninth birthday celebration.

Gavin Vance was there, helping set up a barbecue grill with his cousin Marcus. Maria, the nurse who had become a dear family friend, was carrying a large, homemade strawberry shortcake out to the picnic table.

My mother sat in a comfortable wooden rocking chair on the sunny porch, wearing a light cotton shawl, holding a cup of fresh peach tea.

Her skin was smooth and healthy, her weight fully restored, her eyes bright and filled with deep, serene peace.

I stepped out onto the porch, holding two plates of fresh fruit, and sat on the bench beside her.

"How are you feeling, Birthday Girl?" I smiled, resting my hand over hers.

Mom looked out at the sunlight dancing across the calm lake water. She leaned her head against my shoulder, taking a long, deep breath of the fresh, clean air.

"I was just thinking, Evelyn," she whispered softly.

"About what?"

"About that night," she said, her voice completely free of fear, holding only gratitude. "When you sat in that dark bathroom and asked me to take off my coat. I was so terrified. I thought my life was over."

She squeezed my hand tight—a strong, firm grip.

"You saved my life, my brave girl," she murmured, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes. "You gave me my life back."

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close, listening to the gentle sound of the lake waves lapping against the shore, surrounded by friends, safety, and absolute love.

The coat was gone forever.

And in its place was the warm, unbreakable light of tomorrow.
