Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail War

Over the next three weeks, my life turned into a non-stop tactical war against the financial web Daniel and Vanessa had spun.

I took an indefinite leave of absence from my firm, moving Mom into my spacious, sunlit apartment in the city. I hired a lovely, compassionate private nurse named Maria to assist her during the day while I spent ten hours every night sitting at my dining room table, surrounded by legal documents, bank ledgers, and property deeds.

As a corporate auditor, tracing stolen money was my specialty. And Daniel, despite his arrogance, was a remarkably sloppy criminal.

With the help of a court-appointed forensic accountant, I dismantled every transaction he had made over the previous eighteen months.

Item 1: The Lake Cabin. Daniel had sold the property to a shell company registered in Nevada—a company secretly owned by Vanessa’s brother, Marcus. They had undervalued the property at $150,000 when its true market value was $650,000, intending to flip it six months later to divide the profits.

Item 2: The Investment Accounts. Daniel had forged Mom’s signature on an annuity liquidation form, cashing out her $400,000 retirement portfolio and paying a $80,000 early penalty fee just to get his hands on the liquid cash immediately.

Item 3: The Family Home. Two weeks before my arrival, Daniel had filed a Quitclaim Deed, transferring title ownership of Mom’s house directly into his own name for a consideration fee of $10.

"It's breathtaking," my estate attorney, Marcus Vance (Gavin's cousin), said one afternoon as we sat in his high-rise office downtown. "They didn't just steal from her, Evelyn. They completely stripped her of every physical asset she owned."

"Can we reverse the transfers?" I asked, setting down a thick stack of bank audit sheets.

"With the criminal charges pending and the evidence of cognitive coercion you provided? Absolutely," Marcus smiled, sliding a stack of legal petitions across the desk. "I've already filed emergency motion injunctions with the Chancery Court. The deed transfer for the main house is frozen. The sale of the lake cabin has been voided by state court order under the Fraudulent Transfer Act. And all of Daniel and Vanessa's private bank accounts have been seized under federal asset forfeiture laws."

"What about Vanessa’s brother, Marcus?" I asked. "The one who bought the cabin through the Nevada shell company?"

Marcus chuckled coldly. "He was arrested yesterday afternoon at the airport trying to board a flight to Cabo. He’s been indicted as a co-conspirator in the grand larceny scheme."

I leaned back in my chair, looking out the window at the city skyline.

The trap was closing. Every single person who had taken part in hurting my mother was being pulled down into the dark hole they had dug for her.

"How is she doing, Evelyn?" Marcus asked gently, his tone softening.

"She smiled yesterday," I said, a genuine, warm feeling spreading through my chest for the first time in weeks. "We were sitting on the balcony watching the birds, and she smiled. She didn't look over her shoulder once."
