Chapter 4 - THE CORRUPT NETWORK

By eight o'clock that evening, the dominoes began to fall with terrifying speed.
Driven by blind panic and the realization that his legal immunity was a myth, Richard Holloway called Elena’s cell phone. He was ready to turn state's evidence. Within two hours, Holloway sat in a secure deposition room at the Department of Justice, flanked by his own criminal defense lawyer, handing over hard drives, encrypted emails, and audio recordings.
Elena sat across from him, flanked by Detective Marcus and David Miller. A court reporter’s fingers flew across the stenotype machine, recording every word.
“Tell us about the lake house, Mr. Holloway,” Elena demanded cold-bloodedly.
Holloway wiped sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. “Julian came to me eight months ago. He said his mother was deteriorating and wanted to consolidate her estate. But when I saw the medical records, I knew she wasn’t in a condition to sign anything. Julian offered me a twenty percent cut of the sale price if I facilitated the transfer through an offshore shell company.”
“And my mother’s signature on the revised will?” Elena asked, her voice tight.
“Julian forged it,” Holloway confessed, staring down at his hands. “Chloe held down the mother’s arm while Julian traced her signature from an old tax return. Karen notarized it after I paid her five thousand dollars in cash.”
Detective Marcus leaned forward. “What about the physical violence? Did you know they were restraining her?”
“I didn’t know the extent of it!” Holloway pleaded, his voice cracking. “I swear! But... but Chloe used to brag about how they kept her quiet. She called it ‘medication management.’ Chloe was buying illegal sedatives from a underground pharmacy online—alprazolam and heavy tranquilizers—and slipping them into her food to keep her too weak to resist.”
Elena felt a cold wave of nausea wash over her, immediately replaced by a raging inferno of prosecutorial fury. They hadn’t just abused her mother—they had been systematically poisoning her.
“Where are the offshore accounts, Richard?” Elena demanded, slamming her hand on the table. “Where did they move the rest of the liquidated funds?”
Holloway reached into his briefcase and pulled out a thumb drive. “It’s all here. Julian created three accounts in the Cayman Islands under a dummy corporation called Sunburst Holdings. There’s approximately 1.8 million dollars in total. But... you need to know something else, Elena.”
“What?”
“Julian knows the net is closing,” Holloway said nervously. “When you walked out of my office today, he called someone in Miami. He bought two one-way first-class tickets to Switzerland departing from Miami International Airport tomorrow night.”
Elena’s eyes widened. She stood up so quickly her chair knocked back against the wall.
“Marcus!” Elena barked, turning to the detective. “Issue an emergency surrender order for their passports right now! Get a border patrol hold flag on both of their Social Security numbers!”
“On it!” Marcus shouted, pulling out his radio as he ran out of the room.

Elena turned back to Holloway, her eyes burning like white-hot coals. “If they step one foot onto an airplane, Holloway, your deal is off and I am charging you as a co-conspirator to treasonous flight. You better hope my team reaches them first.”
Elena grabbed her jacket and stormed out into the corridor. Julian and Chloe weren’t just running away with the stolen money—they were trying to escape justice entirely. But Elena had spent her career hunting down fugitive criminals, and she wasn't about to let her own brother escape the reckoning he so richly deserved.
