Chapter 6 - DESPERATE MOVES

Two weeks before the formal trial was set to begin, a desperate, dangerous plot unfolded within the county correctional facility.
Julian, realizing that his legal defenses were completely destroyed, attempted one last, cowardly gamble to destroy the prosecution’s case. Through a corrupt prison guard whom he promised fifty thousand dollars from his remaining hidden assets, Julian managed to smuggle a burner phone into his cell.
From the dark corners of his cell late at night, Julian reached out to a notorious local fixer—a man named Viktor Vance (no relation), who operated in the criminal underworld specializing in witness intimidation.
“I need her silenced,” Julian whispered frantically into the receiver, his voice shaking with desperation. “Not the lawyer—the old woman. If she can’t testify at the trial, the prosecution’s primary victim witness is gone. The physical evidence won't be enough for an aggravated conviction without her direct testimony.”
“It’s going to cost you two hundred thousand, cash upfront,” Viktor’s cold voice replied over the static line. “She’s in a high-security care facility under guard.”
“I don’t care what it costs!” Julian hissed. “Get it done before the preliminary hearing on Tuesday!”
What Julian didn’t know was that every signal from the county jail was being monitored by the State Police Cyber Crime Division.
At two o'clock in the morning, Elena was awakened by a phone call from Detective Marcus.
“Elena, get to the safe house right now,” Marcus said, his voice tense. “Julian just ordered a strike on your mother’s care facility.”
Elena’s heart leaped into her throat. She didn't hesitate. Throwing on a jacket and grabbing her service weapon from her safe, she sped through the rain-slicked city streets toward the private medical estate where her mother was being kept under protective custody.
When Elena arrived, the facility was dark, surrounded by tactical police vehicles with muted running lights. Detective Marcus met her at the side entrance, a team of heavily armed SWAT officers standing ready behind him.
“Is she safe?” Elena demanded, her breath coming in fast gasps.
“She’s completely safe,” Marcus reassured her, holding up a hand. “We intercepted the call three hours ago. We let the contractor enter the perimeter so we could catch him red-handed. Viktor Vance and two of his associates just walked right into our trap in the east wing.”
Inside the building, the silent sting operation executed with surgical precision.
Viktor Vance had bypassed the outer locks, thinking he was slipping into the room of a frail, defenseless old woman. Instead, when he kicked open the door to Room 112, he was met not with an elderly victim, but with four tactical laser sights trained directly onto his chest.
“State Police! Drop your weapons! Down on the ground now!”
Before Viktor could even raise his silenced handgun, heavy flashbang grenades detonated in the corridor, blinding and disorienting him. SWAT officers tackled him to the floor, disarming and binding him in seconds.
Elena walked through the quiet corridor, past the cuffed assassins being dragged away by federal agents. She walked into the real secure wing three floors up, where her mother was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the chaos that had just transpired outside her door.
Elena sat beside her mother’s bed, taking her fragile hand. Evelyn opened her eyes slowly, blinking against the soft light of a bedside lamp.
“Elena?” Evelyn murmured softly. “Is everything alright, dear?”
Elena smiled gently, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her mother’s forehead.

“Everything is fine, Mom,” Elena whispered, tears of relief shining in her eyes. “They tried one last trick, but it’s over now. They can’t reach you anymore. Nobody can ever touch you again.”
With this final attempt at witness tampering, Julian hadn’t just guaranteed his own conviction—he had ensured that he would face federal attempted murder charges that would carry a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
