Chapter 1 - The Vault of Shadows

The heavy oak doors of the guest room shuddered as a second wave of concussive force rattled through the mansion’s lower floors. Dust rained down from the ornate crown molding. The sharp, terrifying pop of suppressed gunfire echoed through the long marble hallways outside.
I pulled nine-month-old Ava closer against my chest. Her little body was hot against my collarbone, her small hands clutching my sweater as she let out a frightened, whimpering cry.
"Claire! Move!" Dominic commanded, his voice dropping into an icy, unyielding register that cut clean through my panic.
He pulled a heavy custom firearm from a concealed bolster built beneath his mahogany desk, racking the slide with practiced, effortless precision. The man who had gently arranged for a private physician to care for my sick child twenty minutes ago had vanished, replaced by the terrifying syndicate kingpin whose name made city officials speak in hushed whispers.
A second guard, bleeding from a graze on his forehead, backed into the room with his weapon raised. "Boss! They blew the front iron gates with breaching charges! Tactical team of eight... they're wearing unmarked gray gear! They're inside the main foyer!"
"They brought breaching charges into my home?" Dominic’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure fire. He grabbed my arm—his grip firm, protective, yet surprisingly careful not to touch Ava—and guided us toward a carved wooden panel along the far wall of the guest suite.
He pressed a hidden release mechanism inside the wall molding. With a heavy metallic click, a seamless section of the walnut paneling slid open, revealing a lit, steel-reinforced stairwell plunging deep into the foundations of the estate.
"Go down," Dominic ordered, pushing me gently into the opening. "There is a panic room at the foot of the stairs. Heavy reinforced door, independent air filtration, secure landlines. Lock it from the inside."
"Dominic, wait!" I shouted over the rising cacophony of gunfire shouting downstairs. "What did you mean about my mother?! Who are those men outside?!"
Dominic looked down at Ava, his hand reaching out to shield her head as another explosion shook the ceiling above us. His dark eyes were haunted, filled with a sudden, overwhelming agony that decades of power had failed to erase.
"Nine years ago, your mother Elena was my fiancee, Claire," Dominic whispered, his voice trembling against the noise of war. "She didn't disappear because she left me. She was taken by my rival, Julian Vance, to break me. I spent almost a decade believing she was dead."
My heart stopped. My throat went completely dry. "My... my mother was your fiancee?"
"She was carrying a secret when she disappeared," Dominic said, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made the floor beneath us feel like it was dissolving. "A secret Vance realized nine years too late. Get downstairs, Claire! I will not lose Elena's daughter and granddaughter in the same lifetime!"

Before I could ask another question, Dominic slammed his hand against the wall control. The secret door began to glide shut. The last thing I saw through the narrowing gap was Dominic turning toward the hallway, raising his weapon as three men in tactical gear burst through the guest room door.
I turned and bolted down the spiral concrete stairs in the dark, clutching Ava against my beating heart as the heavy steel door clicked shut above us, sealing out the noise of blood and iron.
