Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Ledger

The panic room beneath the Romano mansion was less of a shelter and more of an underground war room. Fluorescent lights flickered on automatically as my foot hit the polished concrete floor. The room was equipped with leather armchairs, racks of monitors displaying security feeds from across the estate, a fully stocked medical station, and walls lined with steel gun safes.

I collapsed into one of the armchairs, my legs shaking so violently I couldn't stand.

"Shh... baby, it's okay. Mommy's here," I sobbed softly, rocking Ava back and forth. Her fever was still burning, but the medicine Dr. Bennett had administered thirty minutes ago was finally taking effect; her breathing had slowed into a heavy, warm sleep.

I looked down at the silver locket resting against her chest.

With trembling fingers, I reached for the delicate chain and unclasped it. I had worn this locket my entire childhood, passing it down to Ava the day she was born. My mother, Elena, had given it to me when I was just a little girl living in a tiny upstate apartment, telling me never to take it off, never to show it to strangers, and never to let anyone open the back compartment.

I turned the silver piece over in my palm. The back was engraved with a strange, stylized crest—a falcon perched atop a broken sword.

I brought the locket under the bright light of the security monitors. On the side of the silver casing, almost invisible to the naked eye, was a tiny pinhole release.

Using the tip of an unused syringe from the room's medical desk, I pressed firmly into the pinhole.

CLICK.

The back face of the locket popped open.

Inside, micro-folded onto ultra-thin synthetic paper, was not a photograph, but a tightly compressed grid of numbers, alphanumeric codes, and names. Across the top line, written in elegant, flowing handwriting that I recognized instantly from my childhood birthday cards, were four words:

VANCE INDUSTRIES - THE ILLEGITIMATE HEIR.

My hands began to shake so hard the tiny paper nearly slipped from my fingers.

I looked up at the security monitors on the wall.

On Monitor 4, the camera in the upper foyer showed the aftermath of the fight. Dominic and his security team had completely neutralized the tactical unit that had breached the gates. Four attackers were bound on the marble floor, while Dominic stood over them, his coat off, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his knuckles bruised and bloody.

Suddenly, Dominic looked directly into the security camera mounted above the archway, as if knowing I was watching him from below. He pulled a keycard from his pocket, walked toward an elevator bank at the end of the hall, and descended toward the safe room.

Two minutes later, the heavy reinforced steel door of the underground vault unlocked with a hiss of released air pressure.

Dominic stepped inside, carrying a black tactical case. He took one look at me sitting in the armchair holding the opened locket, and his eyes softened into something deeply human.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice low and tight.

"Who was Julian Vance?" I asked, my voice ringing out clearly in the sterile room. "And why does my mother's locket contain the private banking codes to his offshore empire?"
