Chapter 7 - The Desperate Encounter

A month after the fateful night in the ICU, I took my children home.

Home was no longer the cold, pretentious glass penthouse Grant had purchased in Soho. It was the Vance Estate—a magnificent fifty-acre historic property in Greenwich, Connecticut, surrounded by ancient oak trees, rolling green lawns, and state-of-the-art security perimeters.

On a warm afternoon, while I was sitting on the sunlit back patio watching the three white baby carriages lined up under the shade of a weeping willow, my chief of security, Thomas, walked out onto the terrace.

"Ms. Vance," Thomas said quietly. "Grant Holloway is at the front gate."

I set my teacup down. "Is he alone?"

"Yes, ma'am. He walked three miles from the train station. He looks... terrible."

I hesitated for a moment, looking over at the carriages where my three babies were sleeping peacefully.

"Let him in, Thomas," I said coldly. "Allow him up to the driveway, but do not let him step foot onto the patio."

Five minutes later, a shadow fell across the gravel driveway.

Grant Holloway stepped into view.

He looked unrecognizable. The thousand-dollar tailored suits were gone, replaced by a rumpled, stained jacket and faded jeans. His face was gaunt, covered in unkempt stubble, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow from lack of sleep and sheer, unadulterated terror.

He stopped ten feet from the terrace, looking at me sitting gracefully in my linen dress, flanked by two imposing security officers.

"Clara..." Grant choked out, his voice hoarse and trembling. "Clara, please... you have to talk to me."

"You are standing on private property, Grant," I said flatly, taking a calm sip of my tea. "You have thirty seconds to state why I shouldn't have Thomas throw you into the street."

Grant fell to his knees right there on the gravel.

He put his hands together in a desperate gesture of begging, tears streaming down his dirty face.

"I'm sorry, Clara!" he sobbed hysterically. "I was crazy! I was manipulated by Victoria and her father! They tricked me into thinking the company was going under! I wasn't in my right mind when I signed those papers in the hospital!"

I stared at him, my heart feeling completely cold, untouched by his pathetic display.

"You sat outside the ICU," I reminded him, my voice dangerously soft. "My heart had stopped. Doctors were doing CPR on my body. And when the physician told you I might not survive, your exact words were: 'How fast can we finalize this?'"

Grant flinched as if I had struck him across the face. "I... I was panicked! I didn't know what I was doing!"

"And then," I continued, standing up slowly and walking to the edge of the terrace, "when the doctor asked you to authorize additional treatment to save my life, you checked your watch and said: 'I am no longer her husband. Update the records.'"

Grant buried his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably onto the gravel. "Please, Clara... they frozen all my accounts. I don't have money for food. My lawyers abandoned me. The federal prosecutors are going to indict me next week! I'll go to prison for twenty years!"

"You made your choice in that hallway, Grant," I said, pointing toward the estate gates. "You chose greed over human life. You chose vanity over your own children. You deleted me from your life with the stroke of a pen."

I looked down at him with pure, unyielding majesty.

"Now, the universe is deleting you."

I turned to Thomas. "Remove him from my property."

"No! Clara! Please! Let me see the babies! They are my children too!" Grant screamed as Thomas and two security guards grabbed him by the arms, dragging him backward down the driveway. "CLARA! PLEASE!"

"You relinquished your parental rights on July 19th at 11:04 p.m.," I called out over the gravel. "Update your records."
