Chapter 7 - The Custody Battle

While Nick began his long, painful journey of humility in South Seattle, I turned my attention to the most important piece of this entire tragedy: my grandson, Liam.
Chloe and her parents had retreated to their fortress in Aspen, believing that their wealth and high-society connections would protect them from any legal repercussions. They had filed for emergency sole custody of Liam, citing Nick’s financial instability and "fraudulent lifestyle."
They didn't realize that they weren't fighting Nick. They were fighting me.
I flew to Aspen in my private jet, accompanied by Arthur Sterling and a team of the top family law attorneys in the country.
We met in the plush, wood-paneled conference room of the Aspen District Court. Charles and Beatrice Pemberton sat on one side of the table, looking smug and aristocratic in their custom ski-resort wear. Chloe sat between them, looking arrogant and completely confident that her family's name would carry the day.
"Mrs. Whitaker," Charles Pemberton said, leaning forward with a patronizing smile. "I must say, your sudden appearance in this matter is rather amusing. Nicholas is a bankrupt fraud. His company is in receivership, and he is currently living in a slum in South Seattle working as a clerk. He has no means to support a child, let alone a child of Chloe's pedigree. We will be securing sole custody, and we suggest you return to whatever quiet life you came from."
I didn't smile. I didn't raise my voice. I simply gestured to Arthur, who opened his leather briefcase and slid a thick stack of financial documents across the table.
"Mr. Pemberton," Arthur said smoothly. "I suggest you look at those documents before you speak of 'pedigree' and 'liquidity.' That is a comprehensive audit of the Pemberton Group's current outstanding debts. It seems your Denver project is currently facing a foreclosure notice from Vanguard Pacific—a fund which, I should mention, is seventy percent owned by Mrs. Eleanor Whitaker."
Charles’s patronizing smile instantly froze. His eyes darted to the documents, his face turning a sickly shade of gray as he read the figures.
"Vanguard Pacific?" Charles whispered, looking up at me with wide, horrified eyes. "You... you own Vanguard?"
"I do, Charles," I said, my voice quiet and deadly. "And I also own the debt on your primary residence here in Aspen. If I choose to accelerate the foreclosure on your Denver project, your firm will be bankrupt by the end of the month. You will lose this office, you will lose your home, and you will lose your precious 'pedigree' in this town."
Beatrice gasped, clutching her pearls in a gesture that looked remarkably like a caricature. "This... this is blackmail!"
"No, Beatrice, this is leverage," I said, leaning in. "And I have more of it than you could possibly imagine. Your daughter Chloe married my son for his money, and the moment things got difficult, she abandoned him and tried to hide my grandson from me. I will not allow Liam to be raised by people who value appearances over character."
"What do you want, Eleanor?" Chloe whispered, her voice trembling, her confidence completely shattered.
"We are going to enter into a joint custody agreement," I said. "Nicholas will have standard visitation rights, which will be supervised by me. Liam will spend his summers and holidays with me in Seattle. And you, Chloe, will receive a monthly stipend from my trust to support him—provided you submit to quarterly parental evaluations and keep your parents entirely out of his financial affairs. If you refuse..."
I looked at Charles, whose hands were shaking as he gripped the edge of the table.
"...then your father's firm collapses tomorrow morning, and you will be raising Liam in a rented apartment on food stamps. The choice is yours, Chloe."
Chloe looked at her father, then at her mother, who was staring down at the mahogany table in silent, defeated shock.

"I'll sign," Chloe whispered, her tears finally falling.
"Excellent," I said, standing up. "Arthur, have the papers prepared. I want to hold my grandson before I fly back to Seattle."
