Chapter 9 - The Promotion

Nicholas opened the folder, his eyes widening as he read the document inside.
It was an appointment letter.
Nicholas Whitaker: Director of Operations, Vanguard Logistics Northwest.
"Mom... I... I don't know what to say," he stammered. "Director of Operations? But I'm just a clerk..."
"You were a clerk, Nicholas," I said, sitting on the edge of my desk. "But you have spent six months learning this business from the ground up. You understand the sorting lines, the shipping bottlenecks, and the human cost of every logistical decision. You have a degree in business, and now you have the callouses to match. You are ready."
"I won't let you down, Mom," he said, his voice firm and filled with a quiet, powerful determination. "I swear to you, I will build this company the right way. No shortcuts. No fake wealth. Just honest, hard work."
"I know you will, Nicky," I smiled. "But there’s one more thing."
I reached into my desk drawer and pulled out a small, pale mint-green baby blanket—the very one I had knitted for Liam.
"Liam is flying in tomorrow for his first summer visit," I said, my heart swelling with joy. "And I think he’s going to need his father to tuck him in."

Nick stared at the blanket, his face lit up with a brilliant, tearful smile that made him look ten years younger. He grabbed the blanket, holding it to his chest as if it were the most precious treasure in the world.
"Thank you, Mom," he whispered. "Thank you for not giving up on me."
