Chapter 15 - The Sabotage

Night fell over New York like an iron curtain. In a penthouse suite overlooking Central Park, Julian sat with Arthur Pendelton, reviewing the legal strategy for the following morning’s custody hearing.
"The board is in complete revolt," Arthur reported, looking up from his laptop with a razor-thin smile. "Three major institutional investors have already pulled their funds from Sterling & Vance. Vance is trapped. If he loses in court tomorrow, federal prosecutors will freeze all his assets by noon."
"He knows he's finished," Julian said, staring out at the sparkling lights of the city. Yet, an uneasy knot tightened in his stomach. Marcus Vance was not a man who surrendered quietly. When cornered, a predator doesn't negotiate; it strikes.
Julian pulled out his phone and dialed Dr. Aris's private number in Aspen.
The line rang three times, then went straight to automated voicemail.
Julian frowned, a cold spike of panic piercing his chest. He dialed the head of his private security team at the estate.
Disconnected.
"Arthur," Julian said sharply, standing up instantly. "Something is wrong in Aspen."
"Julian, the hearing is in ten hours! You can't leave New York now!" Arthur warned.
"Try the landline! Try the satellite link!" Julian demanded, taking his coat from the chair.
At that exact moment, two thousand miles away in the Aspen valley, a blizzard of unprecedented fury had descended upon the Elk Mountains. Winds of sixty miles per hour howled through the pines, driving visibility down to zero.
At the base of the mountain road leading to the Sterling estate, a massive pine tree—cut down deliberately at its base with a chainsaw—lay blocking the narrow access pass, severing the fiber-optic communication cables and crushing the power line.
Inside the estate, the emergency lights flickered, plunged into darkness once more, and then went dead completely as the secondary generator's fuel line, tampered with hours earlier by a covert operative, choked on contaminated oil.
Dr. Aris stood in the grand hall, clutching her phone. No service.
"Dr. Aris?" Emma's voice came from the top of the stairs, trembling slightly. She was holding a flashlight, leading Lily, Sophie, and Grace behind her. "The lights went out again. And the heaters are making a strange clicking noise."
Dr. Aris rushed to the thermostat. The temperature inside the grand house was already dropping rapidly as sub-zero mountain air seeped through the timber frame.
"It's alright, girls," Dr. Aris said, keeping her voice as steady as possible, though her heart was pounding against her ribs. "We're going to put on our heavy winter coats and gather in the master bedroom. It has a working wood stove."
Suddenly, the front security gate’s warning horn sounded faintly through the storm outside, followed by the crunching sound of heavy snow tires pulling into the courtyard.
Dr. Aris sprinted to the window, peering through the frost-patterned glass.
Three heavy all-terrain vehicles had bypassed the fallen tree using snowmobiles. Five men in unmarked dark gear were dismounting, holding heavy crowbars and wire-cutters.
They weren't there to wipe servers anymore. Marcus Vance had issued a final, desperate order from New York: Secure the children. If Vance held physical control of the girls under the guise of an 'emergency protective extraction' due to the power failure, he could delay the court hearing and force Julian to sign over the trust assets in exchange for their return.
"Emma!" Dr. Aris spun around, her voice sharp with urgency. "Take your sisters back down to the safe room! Lock the steel door! Do not open it for anyone!"
"What about you?" Emma cried.

"I'm going to secure the main doors! Go! Now!"
The heavy glass of the side terrace shattered with a deafening crash as an iron boot kicked through the frame.
