Chapter 19 - The Trial of Aspen

Judge Vance did not wait for the lawyers to offer closing arguments. She picked up her pen, signed three distinct documents with quick, decisive strokes, and slammed her gavel down with a crack that echoed like thunder.
"Order in the court!" Judge Vance commanded.
She pointed directly at the two federal officers standing near the back doors.
"Warrants for grand larceny, child endangerment, conspiracy to commit fraud, and obstruction of justice are hereby issued for Marcus Vance and Victoria Sterling," the judge declared firmly. "Bail is denied. Officers, take them into custody immediately."
Victoria let out a piercing shriek as the federal agents stepped forward, pulling steel handcuffs from their belts. "Marcus! Do something! You said this was foolproof!"
Marcus Vance tried to pull away, his face contorted in a mixture of rage and terror. "Julian! You think you won?! You destroyed the firm! You destroyed everything we built!"
Julian stood still, watching as the steel cuffs clicked around Marcus Vance's wrists. He looked Marcus straight in the eye, his expression calm, untroubled, and entirely free of bitterness.
"I didn't destroy anything, Marcus," Julian said softly. "I just remembered what was actually worth saving."
The officers pulled Marcus and Victoria down the central aisle, their frantic protests fading into the echoing marble hallways outside until the heavy doors swung shut once more.
The courtroom fell silent. Arthur Pendelton let out a long, ragged breath, letting his hands fall to his sides. "We did it, Julian. It's completely over. The trust is fully restored, your majority voting rights are locked, and your sole legal custody of Emma, Lily, Sophie, and Grace is permanent and unchallengeable."
Julian turned to Dr. Aris, who was wiping a tear from her eye. He pulled her into a warm, genuine embrace.
"Thank you, Doctor," Julian whispered. "For staying by my girls when I wasn't there."
"You were always there, Julian," Dr. Aris said softly, smiling through her tears. "You just had to find your way back through the storm."
Ten minutes later, Julian walked out onto the granite steps of the New York State Supreme Court building. The winter sun was bright, reflecting off the glass towers of Manhattan. A sea of reporters and news cameras was gathered at the base of the steps, flashing lights cutting through the chilly morning air.
"Mr. Sterling! Is it true Vanguard Holding collapsed?" "Julian! What happens to Sterling & Vance?" "Are you returning to Wall Street?"
Julian stopped at the top of the steps. He looked down at the microphones, then up at the clear blue sky above the city. He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed the Aspen estate.
After one ring, a clear, joyous voice answered.
"Daddy?!" Emma’s voice rang through the speaker.

Julian smiled, a deep, effortless smile that warmed his entire soul. He completely turned his back on the cameras, the reporters, and the glittering towers of Wall Street.
"Hey, Emma," Julian said, walking down the steps toward his waiting car. "Pack your bags, sweetie. I'm coming home."
