Chapter 10 - The Beautiful Horizon

A year later.

The summer sun warmed the private dock of our home, casting a sparkling, golden light across the calm waters of the sound.

Our backyard was filled with laughter and the delicious smell of a barbecue. We were hosting a celebration—not a grand, flashy gala like the ones my family used to throw, but an intimate gathering of the people who had helped us reclaim our lives. Dr. Marcus was there, chatting warmly with Richard Vance, who had flown in from New York.

Lily, now six years old and thriving in her new school, was running around the grass with a golden retriever puppy we had adopted, her laughter echoing like music in the warm air.

I stood at the edge of the dock, wearing a simple, flowing white sundress that caught the gentle breeze. My hand was resting lightly on my flat stomach.

"What are you thinking about, my beautiful wife?" Arthur asked, stepping up behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.

"I'm thinking about how far we've come," I said, leaning back against his warm, solid chest. "A year ago, I was a lonely nurse walking home in a torrential rainstorm, feeling like my life was a blank slate. And now..."

"And now, you have the world," Arthur whispered, kissing my cheek.

"We have the world," I corrected him, turning in his arms to look up into his warm, loving eyes. "And Arthur? I have some news."

Arthur’s eyes widened with a sudden, breathless anticipation. "What is it, Evelyn?"

I took his hand and placed it gently over my stomach. "We're going to need another bedroom. Lily is going to be a big sister."

Arthur stared at me, his eyes instantly filling with tears of pure, overwhelming joy. A breathless laugh escaped his lips as he scooped me up into his arms, spinning me around on the wooden dock, just like he had done on our wedding day so many years ago.

"I love you, Evelyn," he cried, his voice thick with emotion as he set me down and pressed his forehead against mine. "I love you so much."

"I love you too, Arthur," I whispered.

Lily came running down the dock, the puppy barking happily at her heels. "Daddy! Mommy! Look at the boat!" she squealed, pointing out toward the water.

We laughed, holding each other tight as we looked out at the endless, beautiful horizon. The rain had finally stopped, the clouds had parted, and the sun was shining brightly on our new, beautiful beginning.
