Chapter 5 - The Medical Conspiracy

Now that my memory was beginning to return, we needed medical proof of my identity and the systematic drugging that had kept me in a state of amnesia for five years.
Arthur took me to see Dr. Evelyn's—now my—trusted friend and neurologist, Dr. Marcus Vance (no relation to Arthur, but a lifelong ally). He operated a private, highly secure research clinic in downtown Seattle.
"If they used chemical amnesiacs, we need to find traces of them in your system," Dr. Marcus explained, prepping me for an MRI and a comprehensive toxicology screen. "There are highly experimental, black-market drug cocktails—specifically GABA-receptor modulators—that can induce retrograde amnesia if administered continuously over a long period. If the Sterlings were funding Whispering Pines, they had access to these experimental drugs."
I lay inside the cold, clanking tube of the MRI machine, focusing on the image of Lily’s smiling face to keep from panicking.
Two hours later, Dr. Marcus sat Arthur and me down in his private office, his expression incredibly grim. He projected my brain scans onto the wall.
"The MRI shows localized, minor scarring in the hippocampus—the area of the brain responsible for memory consolidation," Dr. Marcus revealed, pointing to a highlighted section. "This is consistent with long-term, high-dosage administration of synthetic neurotoxins. And your blood work... it’s even more damning."
He slid a lab report across the desk.
"Your blood contains trace amounts of Oblivon-7, an experimental compound developed by a pharmaceutical subsidiary owned by... you guessed it, Sterling Enterprises. It has a half-life that allows it to linger in bone marrow and deep tissue for years. This is clinical, undeniable proof, Clara. You were chemically lobotomized and kept in a perpetual state of synthetic amnesia."
Arthur slammed his fist onto the desk, his face contorted in absolute fury. "Those monsters. They didn't just hide her; they poisoned her! They slowly destroyed her brain to keep her from coming back to us!"

"But the brain is remarkably resilient," Dr. Marcus said, offering a small, reassuring smile. "Now that the drug is completely out of your daily system, and with the emotional trigger of seeing Lily and Arthur, your neural pathways are rebuilding themselves. The memories will return, Clara. But we must be careful. If the Sterlings find out you are alive and remembering, they will do whatever it takes to silence you permanently."
"Let them try," I said, my voice cold, sharp, and entirely devoid of fear. The meek nurse, Maya, was gone. The fierce, protective mother, Evelyn, had fully taken her place. "It's time to take the fight to them."
