Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

At 1:55 p.m., Daniel arrived at Hartwell Bistro in a cheap hailing-app taxi he had been forced to pay for using the last of his pocket cash. His clothes were damp from the rain, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes were wild with desperation.
He burst through the double glass doors of the high-end restaurant, expecting to find his loyal staff and comfort. Instead, he found the dining room empty during prime lunch hours. The chairs were stacked neatly on top of the tables, and the staff stood in a silent line near the kitchen.
At the center table, sat three senior board members, two forensic accountants, and me.
"Mom!" Daniel gasped, jogging toward the table. "Mom, thank God! Look, whatever game you're playing with Claire, it has to stop right now! They towed my car! They canceled my cards! Vanessa is sitting in a coffee shop downtown crying her eyes out because we can't check into a hotel!"
"Sit down, Daniel," I said quietly, gesturing to the empty chair opposite me.
"I don't want to sit down!" he yelled, his voice echoing off the exposed brick walls. "I am the General Manager of this restaurant! I built this place!"
"You didn't build a single brick," Arthur’s old business partner, Marcus Vance, spoke up from my right. His voice was cold and heavy. "Your father bought the building, paid for the kitchen equipment, hired the head chef, and paid your salary while you took all the credit. And how did you repay the trust, Daniel?"
Marcus pushed a thick financial audit ledger across the table.
"Over the last six months, while your mother was living in your house cooking your meals and scrubbing your floors, you diverted $450,000 from the restaurant's operational accounts," Marcus stated. "You categorized these expenses as 'Marketing and PR.' But our forensic team tracked the money directly into Vanessa's private accounts to buy designer handbags, pay for her cosmetic procedures, and fund her travel vlogs."
Daniel went pale. His knees buckled, and he sank into the chair despite his earlier defiance. "I... I was planning to pay that back. Vanessa’s channel was going to make millions! It was an investment!"
"It was theft," I corrected him.
I leaned forward, resting my uninjured elbow on the table. "When your father was dying in that hospital bed, Daniel, he held your hand and asked you for one thing. Do you remember what it was?"
Daniel looked down at his shoes, trembling.
"He asked you to take care of me," I whispered, tears threatening to spill from my eyes, though I forced them back. "He trusted you. He thought he had raised a man of honor. But the moment his heart stopped, you looked at me not as your mother, but as a bank account with a life expectancy."
"Mom, please..." Daniel choked out, his voice cracking. "I love you. You know I love you! Vanessa was pushing me! She threatened to leave me if I didn't give her the lifestyle she wanted! I was trapped!"
"A real man protects his family; he doesn't throw his mother to the wolves to save himself," I said.
I tapped the paper in front of me. "By unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees, your employment as General Manager of Hartwell Bistro is terminated effective immediately. The board has also voted to file criminal embezzlement charges with the District Attorney's office tomorrow morning."

Daniel gasped, clutching the edge of the table. "Criminal charges? Mom, I'll go to prison!"
"Then I suggest you hire a very good lawyer," I said coldly, standing up with Claire's assistance. "Though I doubt you can afford one now."
