Chapter 4 - The Influencer’s Fall

While Daniel was dealing with his career collapse, Vanessa was facing her own personal hell.
For the past two years, Vanessa had built a massive online following as a "self-made luxury lifestyle guru." Her social media pages were filled with photos of high-end fashion hauls, tours of "her" suburban mansion, and videos giving advice on how to live an "elevated life." Her entire brand was built on the lie that she and Daniel were self-made multi-millionaires.
At 4:00 p.m., Vanessa sat in a high-end coffee shop, sipping a ten-dollar latte while frantically refreshing her bank app, hoping Daniel had fixed the credit card issue.
Suddenly, her phone began buzzing uncontrollably. Notifications began flooding her screen at a rate of hundreds per minute.
She opened her primary video platform. Her jaw dropped.
A video had been uploaded by an anonymous account, titled: The Real Face of Luxury: How 'Self-Made' Influencer Vanessa Hartwell Treats Her Elderly Mother-In-Law.
The video was a masterfully edited compilation. It began with audio recorded by the smart home security cameras that Arthur had installed in the suburban house years ago—cameras that Daniel had forgotten were connected to the trust’s cloud server.
The video captured Vanessa’s cruel voice echoing through the kitchen over the past six months: "Scrub those baseboards properly, Eleanor! You missed a spot!" "Why are you breathing so loudly? Go to your room!" "If you tell Daniel, I'll make sure he puts you in the dirtiest state home I can find!"
Then came the final, devastating climax of the video: high-definition footage of the kitchen from the previous night.
The video clearly showed Vanessa tasting the soup, screaming her insults, grabbing the boiling pot, and deliberately pouring the scalding liquid over my chest. It caught Daniel turning up the volume on the television while I gasped in agony. It ended with close-up, verified medical photographs of my severe second-degree burns, alongside court documents confirming the eviction and financial fraud charges.
The internet reacted with absolute fury.
Within three hours, the video had accrued over ten million views. Tens of thousands of comments poured in, condemning Vanessa and Daniel as sociopaths.
"She belongs in prison!"
"This makes me physically sick. How could anyone treat an old woman like that?"
"Boycott all her brand deals immediately!"
Major corporate sponsors began dropping Vanessa in real time. Her clothing sponsors sent termination emails, demanding the immediate return of sample products and threatening lawsuits for brand damage. Her social media accounts were flagged and suspended for violating terms of service regarding violence and abuse.
Vanessa sat in the coffee shop, hyperventilating as her entire digital empire crumbled into dust in the span of a single afternoon.
Just then, her phone rang. It was her mother, Brenda.
"Vanessa!" Brenda screamed through the phone. "What on earth did you do?! The news is outside my house! People are dropping trash on my lawn! They say you burned Daniel’s mother!"

"Mom, you have to help me!" Vanessa sobbed, pulling her designer sunglasses down to hide her bloodshot eyes. "Daniel’s crazy mother revoked all the trust accounts! We have no money! We were evicted! Can I come stay with you?"
"Stay with me?" Brenda snapped back, her voice full of panic. "Vanessa, the police were just here looking for you! They have a warrant for your arrest!"
