Chapter 10 - The Sun over the Manor

One year later.

The morning sun rose over the restored Moretti estate, bathing the stone balconies and sprawling green lawns in a brilliant, warm golden light. The charred ruins of the east wing had been replaced by a stunning sunroom filled with flowering orchids, white wicker furniture, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Hudson River.

On the lawn, five-year-old Maisie and Rosie were running around in matching white summer dresses, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Vincent had bought them for their birthday. Their bright, ringing laughter drifted up to the terrace like a beautiful song.

I sat at a wrought-iron table, sipping fresh orange juice, wearing a simple cream-colored silk dress. My hand rested casually on my lap, where a massive, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring sparkled brightly in the sunlight.

The French doors opened behind me.

Vincent walked out onto the patio. He wore a simple navy polo shirt and beige trousers, looking relaxed, healthy, and younger than he had ever appeared. The dark shadow of grief that had once defined his very existence had vanished completely, replaced by an abiding peace.

He walked over, sliding his big arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder as we watched our daughters play.

"The contractors finished the new wing down by the lake," Vincent murmured into my ear, his thumb gently stroking the gold band on my finger. "The children's art studio will be ready by next month."

"You're spoiling them, Mr. Moretti," I teased softly, leaning my head back against his chest.

"I am spoiling us, Mrs. Moretti," he corrected with a warm, rumbling laugh, pressing a gentle kiss to my jaw.

Rosie spotted us from the lawn and came running up the stone steps, holding a bright yellow rubber glove she had pulled from the garden shed.

"Mama! Papa!" Rosie giggled, holding the glove up in the air. "Look! The gloves are arguing again! They say Papa has to give Mama a big kiss!"

Vincent looked down at his daughter, then looked at me, a brilliant, genuine smile lighting up his ruggedly handsome face. The man who had once ruled an empire through fear now held an entire world built entirely on love.

He stepped around the table, picked me up easily in his arms, and brought his lips down onto mine in a long, passionate kiss that made both girls clap and giggle on the lawn.

Standing there in the bright morning light, surrounded by the laughter of our children and the quiet peace of our home, I knew that the dark grief which had once threatened to destroy this family was gone forever. We had survived the fire, fought through the shadows, and finally found our way into the light.
