Chapter 3 - The Whispers in the Library

That afternoon, heavy rain began to batter the tall stained-glass windows of the mansion’s private library.
While the girls were busy drawing pictures with bright crayons at a small wooden table near the fireplace, I organized the children's books on the lower shelves. The library was a massive two-story room lined with thousands of rare leather-bound volumes, warm wood paneling, and the faint scent of old paper and pipe tobacco.
A floorboard creaked near the entrance. I turned to see Vincent standing near the grand desk, watching us quietly. He had shed his suit coat, wearing only a dark gray vest over a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing intricate tattoos of thorny vines and protective crests weaving around his muscular forearms.
"You handled Dante well this morning," Vincent said, walking over with his hands casually resting in his pockets.
"I didn't do anything," I replied, placing a copy of The Secret Garden on the shelf. "I just sat there."
"You didn't flinch when he walked in," Vincent noted, stopping a few feet away from me. "Most people who come into contact with my associates spend their time looking for the nearest exit. You stay focused on the children."
"I took this job because I love children, Mr. Moretti," I said, meeting his gaze. "Not because I wanted to be involved in high-stakes underworld politics."
"And yet, you are involved now, whether you chose it or not," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a somber tone. He looked out the rain-streaked window toward the iron gates in the distance. "My world doesn't allow for neutrality, Elise. Anyone who brings light into this house becomes an enemy to those who profit from its darkness."
I paused, holding a book against my chest. "Is that why you kept the girls isolated for so long? To protect them?"
"I kept them isolated because I was afraid," Vincent confessed, the stark honesty of his words surprising both of us. He looked down at his rough, scarred hands. "I can conquer territories, eliminate rivals, and control entire law enforcement divisions. But looking into my daughters' eyes and seeing their mother’s memory staring back at me... it broke me, Elise. I felt like a coward every time I walked past their room."
I took a small step toward him, moved by the profound vulnerability hidden behind his terrifying reputation. "You aren't a coward, Vincent. A coward gives up. You kept searching for a way to bring them back."
Vincent looked up, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my pulse quicken. For a long, heart-stopping moment, neither of us spoke. The sound of the rain outside seemed to fade into the background, leaving only the soft crackle of the hearth fire and the heavy, electric warmth building between us.
Before either of us could move, a sharp knock at the library door shattered the silence.
Frank, the scarred enforcer, stepped into the room with a encrypted tablet in his hand. "Boss. The perimeter alarms at the south gate just went off. Security caught a rogue team trying to plant surveillance devices near the fence line."
Vincent’s soft expression vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of lethal bronze. "Falcone family?"
"Looks like it," Frank confirmed, his hand resting near his coat flap. "They're testing our boundaries."
Vincent turned to me, his voice sharp and direct. "Take the girls upstairs to the safe room in the master suite immediately, Elise. Do not come out until I come get you personally."

"Vincent, are you in danger?" I blurted out, the sudden fear in my chest catching me off guard.
He looked at me, a dark, dangerous smile flickering across his lips. "Miss Navarro, in this city, I am the danger. Now go."
