Chapter 5 - The Counter-Strike

Locked out of his home, Mark retreated to the only place he had left: the corporate office of his tech consulting firm, Whitmore Tech Solutions. He spent the night sleeping on the leather couch in his private office, his mind racing with anger and desperation.
The next morning, his divorce attorney, Donald Vance, rushed into the office, slamming a folder onto the desk.
"Mark, we have a catastrophic problem," Donald said, his face slick with sweat. "I just received the financial disclosure response from your wife's legal team. They aren't just contesting the divorce—they’ve filed a counter-suit for total financial fraud."
Mark sat up, rubbing his bloodshot eyes. "What are you talking about? How can they sue me? She’s just a soldier!"
"She’s not just a soldier, you idiot!" Donald yelled. "Her legal team is headed by Richard Croft! Do you know who he is? He’s the most ruthless trust attorney on the East Coast! They’ve discovered the hidden LLC you set up under Sarah Jenkins' name. They have every bank statement, every wire transfer, every email you sent discussing how you were going to hide the company’s profits to avoid paying her out in the divorce."
Mark felt a sudden, icy knot form in his stomach. "How did they get that? Those accounts were encrypted!"
"Your ex-girlfriend, Sarah Jenkins, cracked under pressure during her military deposition yesterday," Donald explained, pacing the floor. "To save herself from a lengthy prison sentence in a military brig, she handed over all the passwords and documents to the FBI’s financial division. They know everything, Mark. They know you embezzled nearly two million dollars from your own company's clients to fund that offshore account."
"Two million?!" Mark gasped. "No, no, that was just a loan! I was going to pay it back once the divorce was finalized!"
"The feds don't care about your plans, Mark," Donald sighed, sitting down heavily. "They’re treating this as corporate fraud and grand larceny. And there's more. Croft filed a motion to freeze all your personal and corporate bank accounts active this morning. You can't even pay my retainer anymore."
Right on cue, the office door flew open.
Two men in dark suits, accompanied by two local police officers, walked into the reception area. The leading man showed his badge. "Mark Whitmore? I'm Agent Reynolds with the State Financial Crimes Bureau. We have a warrant to seize all corporate servers, financial ledgers, and digital assets belonging to Whitmore Tech Solutions."
Mark stood up, his hands shaking violently. "You can't do this! This is my company! I built this from scratch!"

"Your company was funded by an initial small-business loan co-signed by Anna Whitmore using her military credit line," Agent Reynolds replied coldly. "Since that loan has defaulted due to your accounts being frozen, the state has authorized an immediate asset seizure. Please step away from the computer, Mr. Whitmore."
Within minutes, the office was filled with tech teams ripping hard drives out of the desks. Mark stood in the center of the chaos, realizing that his entire professional empire had vanished in the blink of an eye. He was a man who had thought he was a mastermind, playing a game against a helpless clerk. He had no idea he was actually playing against a highly decorated military commander who had spent her entire career executing flawless, high-stakes operations.
