Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

Two years later, Anna stood before a mirror in her private dressing room at the Pentagon, adjusting the high, stiff collar of her formal dress uniform. Today was a historic day. At the age of thirty-eight, she was being promoted to Brigadier General, making her one of the youngest female flag officers in the history of the United States Army.
The door opened, and David walked in, looking incredibly sharp in his own dress uniform. He had recently been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, his career flourishing alongside hers.
"The assembly is ready for you, General," David smiled, walking up behind her to place his hands on her shoulders, looking at her reflection with pure pride. "How do you feel?"
"Prepared," Anna smiled, turning around to face him. "Where is Victoria?"
"She’s in the front row with Mrs. Rivera, holding a tiny American flag," David laughed. "She’s already telling everyone that her mommy is the boss of the army."
As they walked down the long, historic corridors of the Pentagon toward the grand auditorium, Richard Croft met them near the entrance, holding a single sheet of paper.
"Anna, I apologize for bringing business to your promotion day," Richard said, his expression serious but satisfied. "But the final audit of the Whitmore Tech Solutions liquidation was just completed by the state receivers."
"And?" Anna asked, stopping.
"Mark’s remaining corporate assets, patents, and properties have been fully liquidated," Richard explained. "Every single client he defrauded has been paid back in full using the funds we seized from his offshore accounts. The remaining balance—exactly seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars—has been legally transferred into a restricted educational trust fund for Victoria. Mark signed the final release papers from his prison cell yesterday morning."
Anna took the paper, looking at the signature of the man who had once called her "dead weight." It was shaky, weak, the script of a man who had realized the full magnitude of his ruin. He was currently serving his third year in a maximum-security facility, completely forgotten by the world, while the daughter he abandoned was secured for life by the very assets he tried to hide.

"Thank you, Richard," Anna said, handing the paper back. "Close the file. The operation is complete."
She turned toward the double doors of the auditorium. As they swung open, a roar of applause filled the air. Hundreds of officers, soldiers, and dignitaries stood at attention, saluting the woman who had turned a night of betrayal into a legacy of absolute triumph.
