Chapter 2 - MOLECULAR TRUTH

The basement level of the toxicology research wing smelled of formaldehyde, ozone, and industrial floor polish. It was a sterile, unforgiving environment, far removed from the plush carpets and designer lighting of our Lincoln Park condo.

Dr. Cheryl Vance set two cups of black coffee onto the stainless-steel desk, her sharp, dark eyes studying me from behind rimless spectacles. She was a woman in her late fifties with cropped silver hair and an absolute lack of sentimentality.

On the far counter, two gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) machines hummed softly, their digital displays flickering with complex baseline graphs.

"Drink the coffee, Grace," Cheryl said softly, pushing a box of tissues toward me. "Your blood work came back clean for standard toxins, though your fever is 102.1. I’ve had the nurses administer an IV antipyretic and fluids. You look like a ghost."

"What was on the pillow, Cheryl?" I asked. I couldn't care about my fever. I couldn't care about my own exhaustion.

Cheryl sighed, leaning back against the edge of the metal desk. She picked up a printed sheet of paper, her face darkening into a mask of grim professional disgust.

"If you hadn't brought this in double-bagged, Grace, we might be having this conversation with you in a body bag," she said bluntly. "The substance on the pillowcase is an industrial-grade solution of Aconitine mixed with high-purity dimethyl sulfoxide."

My breath caught in my chest. "Aconitine. Monkshood."

"Wolfsbane," Cheryl corrected quietly. "Extremely potent neurotoxin. It opens voltage-gated sodium channels, causing hyper-excitability followed by complete paralysis of the cardiac muscle. Mixed with DMSO, which acts as a transdermal carrier, it passes directly through the skin membrane within minutes. If you had laid your damp, feverish face on that pillow for twenty minutes, it would have absorbed directly into your carotid artery area."

She tapped the paper. "It causes ventricular arrhythmia, asphyxiation, and death within one to two hours. To an ordinary medical examiner doing a routine post-mortem on a woman who was already suffering from a severe viral infection? It mimics a sudden, massive stroke or cardiac arrest. Unless they specifically run a targeted liquid chromatography panel for rare plant alkaloids—which no standard county coroner does without suspicion of foul play—it would never have been flagged."

The room seemed to tilt. Hearing it articulated in precise scientific terms stripped away the last remaining threads of denial. My husband hadn't just tried to murder me in a moment of passion. He had sourced a rare, highly controlled plant alkaloid, synthesized or purchased a transdermal vehicle, and applied it with surgical precision.

"How did he get it?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"That's what I wanted to ask you," Cheryl said, her eyes narrowing. "Aconitine in this concentration isn't something you buy on the dark web with Bitcoin easily. It requires specialized chemical equipment to refine to this level of purity without degrading the compound."

A cold realization struck me like a bucket of ice water.

"The pharmacy," I whispered.

Cheryl froze. "What?"

"Two months ago," I remembered, my hands clenching into fists on my lap. "Nathan offered to help me reorganize the old archive room in the pharmacy basement. The historical botanical collection... my father used to keep raw alkaloid samples for medical history lectures he gave at the university. He had locked glass cabinets dating back to the 1970s."

"Your father had raw monkshood extract?" Cheryl asked, horrified.

"He had an entire historical toxicology cabinet," I said, tears finally burning my eyes. "Nathan spent three weekends down there alone, cataloging old ledgers for our tax accountant. He said he was saving me the trouble."

He hadn't been helping me. He had been harvesting the weapon he was going to use to end my life.

"Grace," Cheryl said, her tone dropping into an urgent whisper. "I have to call the Chicago Police Department. This is attempted murder with a Class A chemical hazard."

"No," I said instantly, reaching out to grab her arm. "Not yet."

"Grace, are you insane?!" Cheryl raised her voice. "He tried to poison you! He could come back tonight!"

"If you call the police right now, what happens?" I demanded, my fevered eyes locking onto hers. "They go to his hotel in Minneapolis. He denies everything. He says he was out of town. He claims I’m suffering from fever-induced hallucinations. The vial is gone—he carried it out in his pocket! The gray sedan? I don't know the license plate. The woman driving it? I didn't see her face."

I stood up, pulling the IV pole with me. "A man like Nathan will have an alibi for every second of today. He’ll hire a high-priced defense attorney who will turn my medical history inside out, claim I framed him because our marriage was failing, or say someone else broke into the house. I don't just want him arrested, Cheryl. I want him destroyed. I want him facing evidence so tight he can't breathe."

Cheryl stared at me for a long, tense moment. In her eyes, I saw the reflection of my father’s fierce, unyielding pride.

"You really are Arthur Bennett’s daughter," she murmured softly. She reached into her drawer, pulled out a thumb drive, and plugged it into her computer. "I’m backing up the mass spectrometry data, the chemical breakdown, and the chain-of-custody documentation on this thumb drive. I’m storing the pillowcase in our locked cryogenic evidence freezer under a coded alias."

She handed me the thumb drive. "You have seventy-two hours, Grace. If you don't have something concrete to take to the State’s Attorney by then, I am walking this file down to the police station myself. Do you understand me?"

"Seventy-two hours," I agreed, taking the thumb drive. "That’s more than enough time to tear his world apart."
