Chapter 5 - The Ashes of NexaData

Three days after the arrests of Julian Cross and Damon Vance, the news of the scandal had completely consumed the financial headlines across North America.

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: NEXADATA CEO ARRESTED IN $35M FRAUD AND DEFENSE LEAK CONSPIRACY. CHICAGO TRIBUNE: ARTHUR VANCE’S HEIR FOILS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR ESTATE HEIST. BLOOMBERG: VALERIA VANCE TAKES FULL CONTROL OF NEXADATA AMID CORPORATE PURGE.

Valeria stood in the glass-walled executive corner office of NexaData—the office that had belonged to Julian forty-eight hours ago.

The company was in chaos, but under Valeria’s command, order was rapidly being restored. Over the past seventy-two hours, she had personally fired six senior executives who had been complicit in Julian’s offshore schemes. She had appointed a new, loyal board of directors, secured full federal clearance from the Department of Homeland Security after demonstrating that the proprietary code was completely safe, and launched a full corporate restructuring.

The door behind her opened softly. Marcus Thorne walked in, carrying two hot cups of coffee.

“You haven’t slept in three days, Val,” Marcus said, handing her a cup.

“I’ll sleep when the restructuring is finished,” Valeria replied, taking a sip. “How are the legal proceedings going?”

Marcus pulled a tablet from his coat. “Julian’s legal team tried to request bail this morning at the federal courthouse. The judge laughed them out of the room. Given the national security implications of the software transfer and the overwhelming evidence of felony perjury, he’s being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.”

“And Damon?”

“Damon is singing like a canary,” Marcus said with a dry laugh. “The moment his lawyers realized he was facing twenty-five years for federal conspiracy and illegal firearm discharge against federal agents, he started giving up every dirty politician and corrupt judge he ever bribed in Cook County. His cooperation won’t save him from prison, but it’s going to clean up a lot of corruption in this city.”

Valeria looked out at the skyline. The sun was breaking through the heavy clouds for the first time in a week, casting a warm, golden light across the skyscrapers of Chicago.

“What about the secret divorce decree?” Valeria asked softly.

“Victoria Sterling appeared before the Chief Judge of the Family Law Division yesterday,” Marcus explained. “Given that the original decree was obtained through documented fraud, forged power of attorney, and judicial bribery, the court has officially declared the divorce void ab initio—as if it never legally existed.”

Valeria turned around, her brow furrowing slightly. “Wait… if the divorce is voided, doesn't that mean I’m technically still legally married to Julian?”

Marcus smiled—a sharp, triumphant grin. “It meant you were still married to him for approximately five minutes yesterday afternoon—just long enough for Victoria to file an emergency petition for an absolute fault-based divorce on the grounds of felony conviction, spousal betrayal, and fraud.”

Marcus handed her an official court document bearing a gold foil seal.

“The judge signed it on the spot,” Marcus said proudly. “You are officially, legally, and permanently divorced from Julian Cross. But this time, it was done on your terms, in open court, with full public record. And under the terms of the fault decree, Julian has been stripped of every single share of NexaData stock he ever owned. You now own ninety-four percent of the company.”

Valeria held the final divorce decree in her hands. She looked down at the signature of the judge and her own signature at the bottom.

There was no sadness. No grief for the marriage she had lost. Only a profound, overwhelming sense of liberation. Julian had thought he could use the law to erase her, but in the end, the law had been the very instrument that cut him out of her life forever.

“Thank you, Marcus,” Valeria said softly, placing the paper on her desk. “For everything.”

“Don’t thank me, Val,” Marcus said softly. “Thank your father. Arthur always knew you had the strength to run this empire. He just wanted to make sure you were free of the leeches before you took the throne.”

Marcus turned toward the door, then paused. “Oh, by the way… there’s someone waiting outside to see you.”

Valeria looked up, surprised. “Who? I didn’t schedule any appointments today.”

“He’s not a business appointment,” Marcus said with a subtle smile. “He’s someone who helped us trace Damon’s offshore Panama accounts over the last forty-eight hours.”

Marcus opened the door and gestured for the visitor to enter.

Walking into the office was a man in his late thirties, wearing a sharp dark blue suit. He had a strong jaw, intelligent, piercing dark blue eyes, and an aura of quiet, formidable competence.

Valeria instantly recognized him.

“Ethan Vance,” Valeria whispered in surprise.

Ethan was Arthur Vance’s adopted son—a boy Arthur had taken in after his best friend died in a shipping accident twenty years ago. Ethan had grown up alongside Valeria like an older brother, but five years ago, after a bitter fallout with Arthur over corporate ethics, Ethan had left Vance Logistics to start his own high-end international financial intelligence firm in London.

Ethan stood near the entrance, holding a leather folder, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face.

“Hello, Val,” Ethan said, his voice deep, rich, and filled with genuine warmth. “It’s been a long time.”
