Chapter 6 - Old Bonds and New Beginnings

Valeria stood frozen for a moment, looking at Ethan Vance.

Five years ago, when Ethan had packed his bags and left for London, Valeria had felt deeply hurt. She had felt abandoned by the one person in her father’s inner circle who truly understood the crushing weight of Arthur Vance’s expectations. But as she looked at Ethan now—his posture commanding, his eyes filled with genuine care—she realized how much he had matured.

“Ethan,” Valeria said, walking over to him. She didn’t hesitate; she stepped in and embraced him.

Ethan wrapped his arms around her, holding her gently, offering a solid, grounding presence that felt entirely different from the predatory, performative hugs Julian had given her for years.

“I’m so sorry about Arthur, Val,” Ethan murmured softly near her ear. “I was in Tokyo when I got the news. By the time I landed in Chicago, the funeral had already passed, and Marcus told me about the legal storm Julian was trying to drag you into.”

Valeria pulled back, looking up at him. “Marcus told me someone in London was helping trace Damon’s Panama shell accounts. That was you?”

“Of course it was me,” Ethan said, pulling out a chair for her and taking a seat opposite her desk. “Do you really think I’d let that scoundrel Damon and a third-rate opportunist like Julian ruin Arthur’s legacy and hurt you? I spent seventy-two hours straight dismantling Damon’s offshore proxy network. That’s how the FBI got the wire transfer records so fast.”

Valeria smiled, feeling a genuine warmth blossom in her chest for the first time in months. “You always did hate Damon.”

“Damon was a disease,” Ethan said bluntly. “Arthur saw it years ago. That’s why Arthur pushed me out, Val.”

Valeria’s eyes widened in surprise. “What? What do you mean Arthur pushed you out?”

Ethan leaned forward, resting his hands on his knees. “Five years ago, when I discovered Damon was stealing from Vance Logistics, I wanted to handle it quietly inside the company. But Arthur knew Damon was dangerous. Arthur told me that if I stayed in Chicago, Damon would target me. Arthur forced me to leave for London so I could build my own independent firm—a firm that could act as a secondary shield for you if anything ever happened to him.”

Valeria stared at him, overwhelmed by the revelation. Arthur Vance’s strategic foresight was staggering. He had spent his final years setting up every single defense mechanism, every piece on the chessboard, to ensure that when he passed, Valeria would be completely protected.

“Dad really thought of everything, didn’t he?” Valeria murmured, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

“He thought of you,” Ethan corrected gently. “Everything he built, Val, he built for you. But he also knew you didn’t need his shadow over you forever. You proved that over the last three days. You didn’t just survive Julian’s trap—you crushed it.”

Valeria took a deep breath, sitting up straighter. “So… what happens now, Ethan? Are you staying in Chicago, or are you flying back to London?”

Ethan looked around the sweeping office, then looked directly into Valeria’s eyes with a look of quiet, unwavering determination.

“London can run itself without me,” Ethan said smoothly. “Vance Logistics needs a new Chairman of the Board to oversee the international freight divisions while you focus on rebuilding NexaData. Victoria Sterling and the board of directors held an emergency meeting this morning. They want me to step in as co-trustee of the Vance Estate alongside you.”

Valeria looked at him, feeling a deep sense of relief wash over her. For the first time since her father died, she didn’t feel alone. She had Marcus Thorne guarding her security, Victoria Sterling handling the legal front, and Ethan Vance standing beside her as a true, honorable partner.

“Co-trustee, huh?” Valeria said, a slight, playful curve touching her lips. “Does that mean I have to share thirty-five million dollars with you?”

Ethan laughed—a rich, hearty laugh that filled the quiet office with life. “Not a chance, Val. That thirty-five million is exclusively yours. I have my own capital. But what I am offering is my full support. Whatever you need—whether it’s fixing NexaData’s international expansion, hunting down the rest of Julian’s hidden assets, or just grabbing a decent dinner in Chicago—I’m here.”

Valeria stood up, holding out her hand. “Deal, partner.”

Ethan stood up and took her hand, wrapping his warm fingers firmly around hers. “Deal.”
