Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room

The private room on the fifth floor of Seattle General Medical Center smelled like antiseptic and fresh eucalyptus, a vast, merciful improvement over the harsh, sterile chill of the charity ward where Sophia Ramirez had spent the last two months fighting for every breath.

Sunlight, filtered through the grey afternoon drizzle, cast a soft, silver glow across the white sheets.

Bella sat in a blue vinyl armchair in the corner, coloring furiously in a dog-eared notebook with a box of Crayola crayons, her little legs swinging back and forth. When the door clicked open, she looked up instantly.

"Diego!" she squealed, dropping her green crayon and scrambling off the chair.

She ran across the linoleum floor and crashed into his legs, wrapping her arms around his waist as hard as she could. Diego dropped his father’s briefcase—carefully—and scooped his little sister up into a tight, fierce hug, burying his face in her soft hair.

"You're back," Bella whispered, pulling back to look at his face, her big eyes searching anxiously. "Did... did the mean rich men let you talk to them?"

"They listened, Bells," Diego smiled, setting her down gently. "They listened real good."

Sophia Ramirez turned her head slowly on the hospital pillow. She looked painfully thin, her skin translucent and fragile as parchment paper, but the heavy, exhausted shadow that had weighed down her features for months seemed to have lifted just a fraction.

"Diego," she whispered, her voice raspy and weak. "What... what happened at the building?"

Dr. Rachel Morgan stepped into the room behind Diego, holding a thick manila folder stamped with the seal of the Federal District Court. She offered Sophia a warm, radiant smile.

"Mrs. Ramirez, I'm Dr. Rachel Morgan," she introduced herself softly, walking over to the side of the bed and taking Sophia’s frail, cold hand in her own. "I worked with your husband for years. And I'm here to tell you that your husband's work has finally brought justice home."

Sophia’s brow furrowed in confusion. "Justice? What do you mean? The lawyers said—"

"The lawyers lied," Rachel interrupted gently. "Preston Whitmore was arrested two hours ago for federal fraud and corporate corruption. GlobalLink’s assets have been seized, and an emergency federal restitution fund has been established using your husband’s independent algorithm patents."

Rachel placed the manila folder on the bed stand.

"All medical expenses, past, present, and future, are fully covered. The apartment lease has been cleared, and a permanent educational trust has been established for Diego and Bella."

Sophia stared at Rachel, then slowly turned her gaze toward Diego. Tears welled up in her dark, tired eyes, spilling over her lashes and tracking slowly down her hollow cheeks. She didn't say a word. She just reached out her trembling arms toward her son.

Diego rushed forward, burying his face in his mother’s shoulder, letting out all the fear, all the exhaustion, and all the grief he had bottled up since his father drew his last breath.

Sophia stroked his hair, her fingers weak but steady, whispering over and over again against his ear.

"Your father knew," she wept softly. "He always said our boy had the heart of a scholar and the courage of a lion. He's watching us, Diego. He's watching us right now."

Bella climbed up onto the edge of the hospital bed, wrapping her small arms around both of them, her bright laughter filling the quiet room like a beam of warm sunlight cutting through the storm.
