Chapter 10 - The Bridge Home

Late that evening, after the banquets had ended, the flashbulbs had stopped popping, and the conference hall had grown quiet, Diego and his family returned home.
Their new home was a warm, welcoming craftsman house nestled on a quiet street lined with blossoming cherry trees. There were no eviction notices taped to the door. There were no cold, hungry nights, and no fear of what tomorrow would bring.
Inside the bright, cozy kitchen, Sophia was humming softly as she poured cups of chamomile tea, while Bella sat at the dining table, proudly showing off her completed model of the Babylonian ziggurat made out of sugar cubes and cardboard.
Diego walked into his father’s old study—a spacious room lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with lexicons, dictionaries, and historical manuscripts.
He placed his father’s old, duct-taped briefcase on the center desk. He didn't lock it away in a dark closet. He left it right there, open and prominent, as a permanent reminder of where they had started and how far they had climbed.
The doorbell rang softly.
Diego walked down the hallway and pulled open the heavy oak front door.
Dr. Rachel Morgan stood on the porch, holding a fresh bottle of sparkling cider and smiling warmly under the glow of the porch light.
"Happy anniversary of the revolution, Diego," Rachel greeted cheerfully, stepping inside into the warmth of the home.
"Come on in, Dr. Morgan," Diego smiled, stepping aside to welcome her into a house filled with laughter, light, and unconditional love.

Through the open window, a cool, gentle spring breeze blew in from the Seattle hills, rustling the leaves of the maple trees outside. The world was vast, complicated, and full of endless stories waiting to be read. But as Diego closed the front door behind them, locking out the cold and welcoming in the light, he knew they had finally found what every human heart is searching for.
They had found their way home.
